This hose is connected to the black widget above. It appears to be cut off or broken off and not connected to anything. Should it be?

Pretty sure that broken line goes to the charcoal canister. The other line out of it goes to the intake I believe. Part of the Evap system.

i noticed there is a hose (much larger) coming from the "coffee can" , which I'm guessing is the charcoal filter. and that hose is connected to nothing.

There should be two hoses coming from the coffee can. It is not the charcoal filter. The charcoal filter is located nearer the radiator and has two round caps on top of it. Can you take a picture of the coffee can hose you are talking about? Sandy

Edit If you don't have cruise control you may only have one hose and it should go to the vacuum tree if I am remembering correctly.

Here's what it ought to look like. Should be a vacuum hose running up to the purge solenoid (your picture). From there it goes to the intake. As Sandy said that "coffee can" is an entirely different animal - a vacuum reservoir. However, I thought in '96 they weren't the rust prone metal cans, but a plastic bean-shaped thing. At least, that's whats on mine!

Follow the hose with the plastic corrugated cover back towards the black widget, Vapor Management Valve (VMV). I suspect someone has cut that line.

That is part of the air injection system. It has no interaction with the evap system you are inquiring about. It is not what a previous post was referring to anyway.

That cut hose is probably what connects to the hose on the right side of the charcoal canister.

thanks, that hose from the charcoal filter is what was missing back at the VMV. i inserted the hard plastic tube back in the rubber with hose with a hose clamp now to keep it sealed and in place. not sure how i missed that hard plastic tube before, but i was probably looking for a larger rubber hose.

what about that big open hose on the fender? should there be something there?

No. It is supposed to be open to atmosphere.

My manual shows the V8 F150 did as well. Perhaps the 6 cylinder model had a mid-year change?

Nah I found it online - just to show what the canister looked like. It was snowing last night - I wanted to be helpful but no way was I going outside to snap a pic on my truck
