The allison transmissions are good until you start hitting them with higher power levels.
the trans shop I had my 4r100 rebuilt at stuffed a 48re in a 1500+hp competition durmax. I read the original magazine article about it before taking my truck there. When I asked them about it, they said the allison can only be built up to a certain point. The 4r100 and dodge 48re transmissions can both be built to handle absurd power.
They also told me the 48re transmission is very weak when stock and the 4r100 is decent in stock form, so long as you keep it cool and keep power and tire size reasonable.
The only appeal to the allison for me is the 2 extra gears. I would sooner try to stuff a ford 6r140 in a 7.3 than an allison. They can handle well over 500hp in stock form reliably, while the allison is pushing the limit at the stock 440hp in the current duramax.
