Air stuck on defrost?

Hey guys, so heres a little back story, my dad has a 2003 f350 6.8l and last year after the winter months my dad had switched his ac/heater control from defrost to ac and it took like 10-20 seconds for it to switch and his ac only worked on max ac. Fast forward some and again after being on defrost through the winter it wont switch off of defrost at all now. Fan speed works but when you move the selector it doesnt change the direction of airflow. Any suggestions on where to start? Thanks for any advice or help

What year/engine? If it's older then it sounds like a vacuum leak. If it's newer it sounds like a blend door actuator.

You've lost vacuum to the control head, see HVAC FAQs, link is in signature.

Off the top of my head, 2003 was the last year for vacuum controls for the half ton pickup. The Super Duty line transitioned a couple of years later. 2008 model year, IIRC.

Thank you for the info! Now to just track it down, i wonder if it may be the reservoir because there is no vacuum going to the front hubs when you engage the 4wd. I will deff see if we can trace the vacuum lines

Common stuff, start from the intake manifold:

Tubing near battery rots out and cracks.
If 4x4, PVH solenoid body cracks and leaks.
Leaking or ruptured vacuum reservoir.
Any other damage to the vacuum line (missing caps, vermin damage, etc) that runs from the manifold through the fire wall up to the HVAC control head.

I've lay a bet on it being one of the first two.

A hand-held vacuum pump would be invaluable if a visual exam doesn't reveal the cause.
