Slip Joint Seperation

Anyone have any tips on how to free up the slip joint? According to the shop manual the front drive shaft slides in on the splines.

Remove the U-joint that retains the slip yoke to the rear driveshaft.

But the carrier bearing is in the front half section, that’s what needs to be changed

Yes it just slides on. Sometimes the grease can put a little suction on it but after the grease cap is unscrewed it should just slide off. If there is a slight twist in the splines it might cause some issues.

Yep, I used a tiny pick to remove as much of the old hard grease that I could then shot it full of PB Blaster. It's soaking now, I'll keep you posted.

Try using a 50/50 mixture of acetone and auto trans fluid to break it free.

Hammer time! LOL!! Ya, they can get stuck. A little persuasion can get it to slide apart.

Ok here’s how I got it apart and replaced all the u-joints and got a new carrier bearing installed.

If anyone else wants to know how to separate a 50 year old slip joint, this is how I did it:

-clear out as much of the old grease as possible, enough to get some PB Blaster down the splines
-let it soak over night
-remove the grease fitting, pulling them apart creates a vacuum
-tie the ends of each yoke to something immovable I used two 500 lb tie downs and two opposing fence posts
-tighten as much as possible take two 5 lb hammers and tap evenly on each side, take out slack
-repeate until they pop apart

Hope this helps someone
