Injectors not kicking in.

I have a 1988 f150 with a 302 that I purchased and wasn't running and sitting for 8 years. I replaced the fuel tank, fuel pumps, and filter and can't get it to start. The fuel pump primes and will turn on with started fluid but won't stay on. I'm lost and don't know what to check next

I worked on a set of injectors that had pintles that were stuck closed due to sitting around for too long. I soaked them in acetone for a couple of days and then used a battery to activate them while spraying Gumout through them, in both directions. All but one opened up.

I just tested them and I'm getting pulse to the injectors so I guess they are clogged. I was told I can use injectors out of a 98 f150 so thinking about replacing them while I clean them out. Any advice on using the newer injectors

Measure fuel pressure at the fuel rail, if you don't have any then something still isn't right with the fuel pumps.

Are you measuring electrical pulses? The computer may be sending those, but if the injectors themselves are jammed, they may not open. That's why I had to manually clean them out.

Sticking injectors

I've used XLT's technique as well, but just sprayed carb cleaner directly into the injector. On stubborn ones I applied 12 volts.

Some I had to tap with a chunk of brass while applying the electricity. After freeing up, they all displayed excellent spray patterns.

If you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner, it will free up the injectors as well. I just use dish detergent and water as a cleaner.

There will probably be small amounts of goo and varnish in various parts of the fuel system even after changing all those parts. My recommendation is to put only one or two gallons of gasoline in, then add one or two quarts of pure isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the gum.

There is also a 70% isopropyl alcohol sold, do not use it as it won't mix with the gasoline. If in doubt, mix a bit in a bottle with gasoline before adding it to the fuel tank.
