Belts chafing

Hello all,

On the engine (7.3L IDI) from my 1989 F-350 I have the crank-power steering belt chafing against the crank-AC compressor belt.

That made me change those belts, and with the new belts they still were chafing, in mid air where they cross each other.

Then I put some washers behind the power-steering pump and the bracket, with the idea to generate some more space between those belts, and after a good 50 Miles we're back to start, and they are chafing again.

Is this a known situation? and does someone have a better solution instead of my washers?

Any advise is welcome!

They are out of alignment. Put a straight edge on them and see which one is not straight. You can also look at them from the side. Look at the pulleys to see where the belts are riding

You are correct, out of my head, (I did the washer thing almost two months ago) the power steering pump is too much forward.
By undooing the bolts to the pump, and put one or two washers underneath and reinstalling them, I thought to have corrected that situation, giving more space between those belts so that the chafing should have stopped.
but 50 miles down the road, I'm back at the beginning

It sounds like you pulley has slipped back some. It is a press fit. It takes a special puller to get it off. It not hard to get off.

When I changed mine. I got the pulley close before I nstalled the new pump, then use a bolt , a nut, and big washer to move the pulley into position for proper way alignment

I've searched for that tool, Amazon does not ship to France, and over here I can buy the same tool for 120€ is almost 120$, so that's a nogo.
I've also had a look at my pump/pulley, and it seems to be really well attached, no signs of deplacement/slippage or the like. are you sure in that you think it came loose

No I am not 100% but unless the mount is bent which I doubt they are the only other place that affects belt alignment.
It may not be alignment it may be one or both belts are too wide. You can go to a narrower belt it will just ride a little lower in the pulley

well, actually that's the reason why I got all new wider (original) belts, the old ones were at one place in history replaced by smaller ones, and the most were bottoming out, and therefore slipping in the poulies.
So one way or another I'll have to find out the glitch here...

I won't go back to the smaller size belts, while being smaller it takes much less time before these belts bottoming out on the pulley and start slipping. That's my experience.

Actually that's a good one, no I don't for the moment, beeing an ambulance and I removed the body, the AC in the back is deconnected.
Though I have in the planning once the truck is registered I reinstate the AC, the summers here are hotter and hotter every year.

Ambulance belts could be differant only for alt. But there is a 15/32(11.81 mm) and 1/2 "(12.7 mm). Since they are close to each other that could be the problem

Well Hugh,
I researched the sizes I needed according to the original Ford part no's, and for the dynamo, there was a specific Leece Neville sticker with their part no. and for the most belts that was correct. they were all 1/2" exept the dynamo-vacuumpomp belt, that was a smaller one.

Just trying to help. I saw the ambulance had a different Alt belt. The 2 belts we have been talking about are very close together any way. When I changed mine I had look from top to make sure they were not touching. Maybe a 1/16 inch between them
