door handle shaft repair- '56

I can't believe I couldn't run into something on Youtube about replacing the chewed up door handle shafts on my '56. I've got it out of the truck but how does the repair go?

To be truthful neither attachment shows very much. Or am I missing something?

The instructions I posted just shows how it all goes together, I put the longer shafts on mine. Like they say you almost need three hands but once you get the first on done the second is much easier. You don't want to do it in a real cluttered shop because those springs can fly a pretty good distance...lol

Thanks John I've either got to fix some or go electric.

MidFifty

After taking the door handle regulator out of the truck and pricing the shaft, I figured it was just better for twice the price of the shaft to just buy the regulator new. The window regulator- that I purchased the shafts- it looks pretty straight forward.

The door regulator is pretty easy to do really but you do need a welder to put it back together..

Easy process?

I got the new shafts today for the window regulators and This doesn't look simple to me. Is it correct to drill holes in the gear as my holes look like they will be just below the teeth of the gear- maybe a bit too close. Does anyone know of a Youtube or similar for this?

What I did was crank it as far as it would go and marked where the rivet was then cut a small corner off the gear where my finger is pointing.

cranking it all the way to the other end of the gear I marked and cut a small corner off again. It doesn't effect the operation of the window crank but allows access to install the bolts for the crank shaft installation.

Done finally

What a PITA these are but it's done. I ended up grinding about 3/4 of an inch out of each side of the fan gear-like 56panelford says- which allowed me access to the rivets for the gear box. Thank God I was at my buddy's shop with a welder so I could tack the shaft down. That also allowed me to use rivets to reattach the cover! Now, with good teeth on the shaft, I now have to buy all new handles because mine are wallowed out.
