No 4x4 - looking for a test thread
Hi
Something popped on my 92 4x4 when I was in a mud hole and I lost my 4x4.
There was a thread (or was it a post in the "What have you done to your truck today" thread?) that explained how to test and narrow down the issue.
Does anyone know what thread or post I'm talking about?
I did a search using my cell but after 30 pages I could not find the thread.
Thanks.
Chris.

I haven't seen any blogs on that but Ill try to help.
Is it a F150, F250, or F350?
Does 2wd work?
Auto locking hubs or manual?
Where was the pop come from? Front or rear? Left or right?
What have you tested so far?
If it were me, I would. IM going from cheapest to most expensive:
1) Inspect the front axle input shafts and u joints.
2) Jack up the truck and get all 4 tires off the ground
3) Make sure you have safety jacks.
4) Lock hubs (if you can)
5) Crawl underneath and spin the front driveline to front axle.
If the driveshaft spins the front tires (Both spin not just 1) then go to step 8.
If one tire spins it can be a hub or the differential
6) Then take apart the hub at this point to see any damage like broken metal or springs or anything.
7) You can also take out the input shaft on both sides to insect to see if it broke at the diff.
8) Put it in 4x4
9) Spin one of the tires and see if any of the other tires are spinning.
If the front tires spin and the rear do not then is the transferase.
Im not sure how much your looking at spending on the repair/building up the truck. If it were me, this would be a good time for some upgrades.
1) If the hubs broke. (Automatic locking or manual) Better locking hubs. (i.e. Warn or MileMarker)
2) If the front input shafts broke I would get better ones. I was thinking of doing the RCV jointed ones for my dually.
3) If the diff blew up, I would put in a locker up front. I would do OX or ARB or any sort of locker. My lifted F350 has Detroit lockers all the way around.
4) If the transferase blew up have a professional rebuild it. Ive rebuilt a transmission and it was very difficult.

Hi folks.
One quick question.
Do I need these springs or are they part of the old locking hub system?
I am installing warn premium hubs and can't recall if these went between the locking hub and the wheel bearing locking nut, or if they were a part of the old locking hub system.
The answer should be known to me, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank.
Thanks!

Did it not come with instructions?

They were parts from the old hub system.
The new hubs had a different type of spring.
I just left it out - it didn't make sense to install it as I could not logically figure out where it would belong.
Took the truck out to a fishing spot and the 4x4 did its job well.
Thanks.
