Engine stumbles and wants to die when turning at low speeds.

1995 F150 with a 351, completely stock. When I have the wheel turned, and am trying to move around at very low speeds (pulling into a parking space), the engine stumbles, and wants to die unless I give it some gas. It doesn't do this when I am turning at higher speeds. The engine also surges sometimes when I'm idling in gear, and rolling forward.

Any suggestions on why it would do this?

From What I've read, This seems to happen when The transmission filter falls out of the transmission and is Laying in the pan. I am having the same issue as yours with my 88 f150. Mine also stalls when shifting into reverse.

IAC means Idle Air Control right? How do I test mine?

i would try to isolate the problem by ... pulling codes, checking fuel pressure with a gauge, and checking for vacuum leaks.

There are no codes, no obvious vacuum leaks, and I'm not sure why fuel pressure would be affected when turning. It has been suggested to me on other forums about the IAC as well, and I picked one up tonight. I will throw it in on Monday and see if that fixes it. I found a very detailed write up on FSB on how to test and replace it.

please clarify "no codes" ... you should at least get a "system pass" code to indicate that the computer is communicating with it's sensors.

turning at low speed places increased load on the engine; thus the possibility that it's not getting enough fuel.

Maybe I'm out here in left field but could EGR valve be open and making the engine run weak at idle? EGR should be shut at idle. My EVR failed and was holding EGR valve open all the time. I put a vacuum gauge on the EVR to EGR line, T'd in, and found that there was vacuum to.EGR at all times and more vacuum than what I was told was normal while driving. New EVR and good to go. I don't recall a low speed steering stalling issue, but maybe I dont do much of that? Anyway, just an idea if IAC checks out. Free to check if you have a vacuum gauge too.

^^. Are you assuming there are no codes because the check engine light is not on?

Well I Cleaned My IAC valve yesterday with throttle body cleaner and reinstalled. Also new wires and set the timing. My truck is now running 100% better. No miss, and I can't make it stall when I try. Good luck. Could be a timing issue.

If your truck has the pressure switch in the high pressure power steering line, that switch could be bad. It's supposed to increase idle when turning the wheels.

As far as I'm aware, that's only on 5.0L engines.

How is you warm idle? Cold start idle?

If the new IAC doesn't solve your issue, look at cleaning up your EGR system components. EGR valves are an issue at low idle as they get age and mileage on them.

I was thinking along the same lines. There should be NO EGR flow at idle, and if there is, the engine will run weak.
