Pre fill oil filter?

How many here, that change their own oil, pre fill the new oil filter before installing it? Just wondering if I'm the only one. Thanks.

Over a few years of reading, I would say there are many that do, and many that don't. I fill mine most of the way before reinstallation, but don't sweat having it flush with the top.

Same for me. It's the easy way to get the 13th qt measured out, then it's just a matter of dumping the remaining 12 qts in.

Always. And when you do be sure to do your best to fill it through the outside holes and let it filter to the center. Otherwise you send unfiltered oil right to the bearings. Granted it's new and should be clean..............but you never know.

I see no need. Most of the gas burner engines use to have the oil filter mounted at an angle that would not allow you to pre-fill the filter. Never heard of any of the hipo engines such as the 427, boss 302 or boss 429 and similar CJ/SCJ engines ever have a problem by not trying to fill the filter during an oil change.

There should be enough oil film on the bearings and parts to prevent problems prior oil filter filling and pressure up to normal psi.

For me, filling the filter is just an opportunity to drop the filter or turn it on its side prior to installation and making a big mess....lol

I used to do it for my old truck, my 96 F250 after I put the dual filter setup on with the adapter plate on the 351w. I can't do it to my son's 99 Cherokee XJ as the filter sits horizontal on the motor, same as on the 22re's that my 88 and 94 4Runners came with. But when I have changed my wife's oil in the 09 Escape, I've prefilled the filter. Now, I've been taking it to a friend's shop. I take my new 16 to the dealer.

Every oil change I do, the filter gets filled with oil. Not 100% full but at least 80%.

Oil

Yep I fill it and then put it on. It holds a little more then a quart so I fill it. The oil pump would have to pump a quart + before the oil leaves the filter without pre filling.

But I don't sweat filling it to the very top

I pre-fill mine as well. Plenty of mechanics have told me it is not necessary...but common sense tells me it will certainly be beneficial to not starve the engine of oil for 3 seconds or so while the pump fills the filter...

I also have been filling oil filters for decades now. A 2-4 second dry start every oil change, is a cumulative negative affect on engine longevity imo

But, to be concerned with trying to pour oil thru the check valve holes of the filter to make sure it gets filtered, is way way way over kill imo, unless you first filter the other 12 quarts before you pour it down the oil fill tube..?
