73 F-350 with a recent engine swap. Rt. Brake light does not work and the bulb is fine. Rt. Rear turn signal works (tail lights work fine) and the left side is fine. This is also the case with the trailer lights and the mid-camper connector, no right brake light, everything else works. So, somewhere around the cab is some sort of wiring harness/switch that is malfunctioning the sending of the Rt. Brake light signal…where could it be? Any help would be appreciated.
Probably the turn signal switch, behind the steering wheel, is dead.
Very common problem. The little metal clip that connects the brake light power to the wire going to the rear light is most likely broken or fallen out.
The brakes and the turn signals share the same wires from the turn signal switch to the rear of the truck. They also use the same bulb filament and grounds.
So if the turn signal works and the brake light doesnt.....problem is in the switch.
Thanks Sparky. Sure enough that is what it was. However, with that replacement comes another problem. I had to slide the auto gearshift selector up to get the wiring harness through the column. In so doing, I must have somehow disabled the neutral/park safety start switch such that now the starter will not engage. Rats. Do you know where that thing is? I am starting a new thread.
It should be on top of the steering column......towards the middle between the dash and the floor.
It is sort of a slider type switch. Should have two blue/red striped wires and two black/red striped wire connected to it. The blue are neutral/park start circuit and the black are the reverse lights.
Put the truck in park and adjust the switch until you can start it. Then make sure it only starts in park or neutral, keep your foot on that brake if it starts in gear it will jump.
There is an adjustment procedure in the manual that involves measuring with a drill bit, cant think of the size right now, but I have always had good luck adjusting "by feel"
