There are a lot of people less than impressed with the E4OD but in many cases it's not the transmission that is the problem, it's the system that controls it. Are you getting any codes and does your speedo work normally? Since the same computer controls both the engine and trans almost any sensor problem can affect the way the transmission is controlled and the TPS and VSS in particular are critical to proper trans operation. Check for codes even if the check engine light isn't on.

Do you have the truck or car intake on this motor? The thing definitely needs better heads but the cam isn't too shabby, you could add 1.7 rockers for more total lift for example. And if you do get a pair of GT40 heads or better I'd suggest you swap on either the Explorer or truck intake as the HO is too small for anything but stock heads.

Conanski, the speedo did not work but I got it fixed (was the VSS THANKS to you guys of this board I found it and fixed it). It drops into R or D when I first put it in gear. Shifts hard coming out of 1st. Its not as bad since I fixed the VSS, has not shut off in R and does not shift as hard going into 2nd as it did and is now a smooth shift coming out of 2nd to 3rd. Looks more and more like you guys are dead on, it must be SUPER hard to find a shop thats good enough to do one of these E4OD's...

OK I need some advice from you experts on motor swaps.... I have found a 351W that is in my budget. Will this motor work in my truck? How much trouble to run this as an EFI instead of carb? This is an email from a friend of a friend:

I got a ’74 Windsor.
Ported heads & screw in rocker studs
Will need gone through, been sittin.
Got new pistons in a box 4 it.
I’ve got 40+ hours porting on the heads+new ARP studs & machined for dual valve springs, heads milled .010.
These heads will FAR outflow any factory iron stuff including GT40.

That motor will work fine as long as you use a compatable cam like the Crane 444232. You'll also need a 5.8 EFI intake, fuel rail, and distributor(5.0 parts won't fit), and also a 5.8 dual sump oilpan and pickup.

Thank you sir! Does $300 sound like an ok deal for that? Not sure what kind of heads or anything, as of now the only info I have on it is what I gave to you plus the price. Also being my 302HO is SD will it hold the power of a 351 build? I read on some of your older threads that you sometimes say that when you get in higher HP builds you need to switch over to a MAF. Also reading about injector size being a factor in bigger HP, how high of HP until these become a factor? Not sure how much HP I will be able to afford out of this if I get it but just reading other threads trying to plan ahead.

$300 is a deal for complete motor that is in rebuildable condition. Problem is you won't know what it needs until it's disassembled and measured. The heads could be great but could also be a waste of money... just depends what they were to begin with, if they come with a valvetrain or not, and if the guy doing the porting knows what he is doing or just thinks he knows what he's is doing.

Your truck is SD so yeah.. unless you upgrade that to MAF you will be limited on how far you can take the motor. If it turns out the heads with this motor are what would have come on it and the PO has actually done some good work on them, and you use a stock truck EFI intake and the cam I suggested, the motor will run well on the SD EFI system with 19lb injectors and it will make 300hp or there abouts. That will be pushing the stock EFI and fuel systems to the limit however, if the motor has significantly more potential than that you will need to upgrade to MAF and add bigger fuel pumps or swap to a carb setup.. both of which will cost you quite a bit more $$.
