so, this happend a few weeks ago, just havent felt like messin with it, but... went out to go to work one morning and my truck wouldnt start. its an 84 f250, auto with a 351W.. about a month ago, i replaced the starter, easy, worked fine. then io replaced the ignition switch last night, still nothing, got a lock cylinder today, but cannot figure out how to get the other one out.. i read that under nweath of it theres a hole with a button, or a button, something but cant seem to get it..
it wont crank at all.. kinda like when i turn the key its not moving the actuator far enough forward to engage the ignition switch but.... i finally got the lock cylinder out, and messing with the new one, it fell apart and all the little pieces fell out, and sadly i lost 3 or 4 of em.. gonna have to canabalize the old one for em.. ugh...
I had to pull my wheel to get the lock cylinder out, and then I noticed ALOT of sticking when I turned the cylinder. So I used some bearing grease on the cylinder itself and put some gun oil to go down the length of the funny looking half gear and the rod that goes down the shaft of the column, worked it a few times, put it all back together & my Blue has worked ever since.
The actual ignition switch is on the top of column just behind the dash, there is a metal
rod that leads from the lock cylinder mechanism to it and it's that mechanism that actuates
the switch.
That switch's placement is adjustable, it can be moved along the column (IIRC using
something around 7/16" bolts, might be 10MM). You'll need to remove the headlight & wiper
*****, the cluster trim panel, a trim panel beneath the column, and the column shroud to
access it; then, a few bolts to drop the column. Sounds like a lot but it's pretty easy.
Yeah, the gear assemblies of the lock mechanisms get gooped up over time and stick... I
removed & cleaned mine, used white lithium grease as a lubricant.
If the brake light comes on when you turn the key to start, can one assume the ignition switch is correctly placed on the column?
Not necessarily. But if you have never messed with the ignition switch, then we can assume it's in the right place. If it's ever been changed, the new switch comes with a pin that locks it in the off position. You make sure the key is in the off position, bolt it on, and then pull the pin.
If you have a problem where the keyswitch doesn't seem to turn far enough to make it start, there is a piece inside the column(if it's a tilt column) that breaks causing this problem.
you clearly haven't met the new part quota for your truck to run. for every one new part your truck actually needs, multiply by 3 to reach the amount of parts your truck actually wants. after you make this offering, your truck may like you enough to crank a time or two before deciding you haven't given it enough shiny new things... remember, it's a ford.

This is so true! HA! My truck has decided that some of the things I fixed before need to be coddled again. My starting issue came back, and I have all sorts fo grounds to try to make it happy.
My truck did the same exact thing to me the other day, wouldnt do anything when i turned the key. It was just a bad ground at the battery, cleaned up the negative post and wires... Started right up. Gotta love a free fix. Try the easy stuff first, man. Good luck!
