New to Diesel Trucks and i have some questions

Hey guy i just wanted to thank you for the help in advance. I am a newbie to diesels and am looking into buying a 2006 F-250 with 63,000 on it.. It already has a 4" exhaust and a cold air intake on it, no tuner though. This is where all my questions start. There seems to be some oil around the intake filter. What could this be from? could it be from the crank case vent? If so would a ccv re-route fix my problem? Also with these modifications should i have a tuner in (sct?). Also i have read alot about EGR valve deletes and other parts that should be replaced. Basically im asking what i should do and what i shouldn't do. Thanks in advance. Also what kind of MPG can i expect.

Welcome to FTE.

The oil in the intake is most likely from the ccv and not an issue as lond as you re-route it.

Before you buy a used truck, get an OASIS report on it. The dealership should be able to get it for you. If not, there may be folks here that are willing to contact you and help out.

Many believe you should install head studs before a tuner. If you want reliability, you should.

Gauges are a very wise investment.

You get an OASIS report from a Ford dealer. It will show you all of the warranty service (and any other dealer service) performed on the vehicle. I didn't know about it before I bought my truck and got lucky. 73k and only the STC replaced.

You don't really need to have a tuner with those mods, in fact, an intake really isn't going to give you any benefit until you are looking at bigger mods such as injectors and turbo(s). Contrary to popular belief, a/m intakes aren't better then stock ones when it comes to the 6.0 and the 6.4 engines. Now on the 7.3s that's a different story.

However, if you are going to go the tuner route, I would suggest something that does custom tuning. SCT that you mentioned is a good one, Spartan is another, PHP has a good reputation that I've heard about, although I don't have any personal experience with them. SCT will probably be the cheapest route for you.

Rather you tune or not, I would suggest in a good set of reliable gauges.

You don't have to delete the EGR valve. That is another commom misconception. You really have to drive these vehicles differently and be a lot more fussy with the upkeep. However, doing that will vastly improve your enjoyment as far as reliability goes with a 6.0. I can't get more firm then that, because as soon as I do, you'll be that one in a billion chance that something craps out on and then I'll look like the liar. Sometimes things do just happen and it's Murphy's Law that it would happen when I said something opposite.

I hate to say this, but really no matter what anybody tells you, you may or may not see that mileage as mpg is so individual that it's hard to pinpoint a good average. That is further complicated by the fact that mpg "ratings" for the 6.0 based on customers "calculated" mpg tend to be all over the place with the 6.0. So I really just flat out don't trust them.

I look at getting decent mileage on my PSD as a bonus, not a requirement. Most of us get these trucks because we have something to haul and need the power which typically has the trade-off of poor fuel economy. They best "mod" I saw someone mention to get better fuel economy was to stick a 2x4 under the gas pedal.....that should keep you in the upper end of the teens.

I would recommend removing the cold air intake and replacing it with the stock intake and Donaldson filter. This will provide better filtration for your engine than any aftermarket set-up and unless your running high end power modifications will flow a sufficient volume of air for your engine.

The oil you are seeing on/near the intake filter is most likely filter oil. You have to apply "oil" to most of the aftermarket High Flow Filters... If you don't oil them you end up with serious engine damage...
