Water in fuel light with Power Service

living in Minnesota as long as i did i can tell ya it gets D*MN cold up there and that Power Service, (Diesel Clean, etc) is the ONLY thing we use.. We use it on the farm also, it's never failed us, even on the coldest mornings. I would suggest changing the filter and if you can't afford a filter at the time, which believe me i think we all feel the economy, just drain the water seperator on the bottom of the filter for now. Good luck!

Right now it has a Baldwin BF1222 that seems to cross reference to a Wix 33417. It says fuel filter/water separator. I don't have the glass bowl on the bottom but there is a drain on the bottom of the filter.... is that for draining off the water?

Yes the water will be in the bottom of the filter.

ok I just went out and drained about a cup and half out of the bottom of the filter. Started it up and it ran for a minute and died... Figured it lost some of it's prime. Did 3 cranking sessions with the pedal mashed before it came to life, it sputtered for a few seconds and smoothed out. Seems to be running good now and the water light is not on!
Guess I need to change that filter?

Winter temps with tanks not kept full will cause condensation in the tanks.

And that makes it's way to the water seperator.

But if you don't know when you last changed the filter, changing it would be a good thing.

I just got the truck the day after Christmas, PO had no records on filter changes etc. The filter itself looks pretty old, I will pick up a new one tomorrow. How long should I go between changes?

Personally I change mine every fall right before winter and again in the spring when we go back to regular fuel.

Cheap insurance for a dependable starting vehicle.
Last thing I want is a dirty fuel filter making my truck hard to start at midnight when I am heading out to plow snow.

Keep the tanks full, run a bit of Diesel Kleen winter formula, fires right up and ready to go make money.
Makes no difference if I plugged in the evening before or not at temps well below zero.

Mine went almost 7 years without it getting changed, but I'd change it probly once a year.

That's how often I have always changed both my fuel filter and air cleaner in my gas rigs... guess diesels are not so different after all. I picked up a shiny new wix for it today, will get it put in tomorrow after work and see how she runs.

As a side note... after removing that water from the filter last night the water in fuel light has not come on again and it ran like a top today, was even easier cold starting it after work then it has been.

Does anybody know if the sensor is sensing water or restriction in the filter.
Listening to how long between changes you guys go may be the reason I have never had ip trouble even though I dont run a water seperator.
I change mine at least every other oil change, and even though I never need it I carry a spare at all times. but there is a big price diff in the 6.9 filter and the7.3 one.

I paid $37 for mine at my local mom and pop auto parts store. That would get expensive every other oil change.

water in fuel Light

If the light comes on i always just open the fuel filter drain valve and drain the waterr out. I believes that's what it says to do in the Truck Maint. book. The filter will refill itself when you crank it.

Yea warozz I only have one 7.3 and belive it or not the price has come down. When I closed my shop (also a stocking dealer) I had decant discount and my price 11 years ago was like 36 dollars. So when I installed the 7.3 I changed the filter header to the 6.9 style. I lose the water seperator but the filters now are 9 to 11 bucks.

Water sensor in the bottom of the filter, senses water.

Filter restriction sensor if equipped with one is in the header beside the return line.
