Hey guys, I am looking at buying a 1994 F-350 Crew DRW with the PSD and 220K on the ticker. Here is the deal, the guy said the truck has sat for around 6-8 months then he decides to take it for a spin and it was running great til he switched tanks (not sure if he ran the first one dry or not) then he says it puked a little black smoke and it hasn't run since. He is wanting $1500 for it and the truck looks really clean and straight other than the bed witch just looks like it was used as a truck. Not much wear on the overload pads so he didn't haul a bunch of wieght in it all the time.
I am thinking either he ran the first tank dry, fuel solenoid switch is bad, or rear fuel pump bad. Do you think I should snag it?? I would think that even if I had to put $1000 in it I would be way ahead!!
sounds like a good deal even though its not running. first thing to check is fuel pressure under the plastic engine cover it should be 40-60 psi. it uses a standard shrader valve on the drivers side near the engine lifting eye. these have a mechanical fuel pumps in the valley of the engine. there are no fuel pumps in the tanks. also before you buy it pull the intake off at the turbo and make sure the impeller blades of the turbo are straight and no large dings or chips. if there is the air filter may have been neglected and dirt could have entered the engine.
i would buy it regardless. its a 5 spd obviously being a 94. 220 is not very high of mileage for these motors. could be a couple things. but not too bad. only one fuel pump on these trucks.
I'd jump in it with both feet - if for no other reason, to use as a salvage. If it sat for that long with fuel tanks not full, then it may have water in them. Check the fuel filter housing for water.
id buy it no matter what though, even if u do spend money into it, it will be well worth it and just think after u get it to runnin u only paid 1500 for it then what ever u had to fix it and then u can start on mods too lol, id buy it though if it was me but i got a truck for now Lance
BIG THANKS for all the replies guys!! I think I will go back out to his house Monday and pull the intake tube and take a gander at the turbo fins. Don't want to diagnose and fix it at his house or he might jack up the price lol. Where is the LOW pressure fuel pump?? Is it cam driven?? Once I get the beast to the shop I will let you guys know what I find.
the mechanical pump in the valley is cam drive and is a tandem pump meaning it has a chamber for low pressure lift pump and another to pressururize the fuel to the higher pressure
Well I think I made the deal on the truck. Soooooo, I need some recomendations on where to start. I have cranked the engine and it builds OP and the tach works so I will assume the CPS is good but I will put a multi meter on it to be sure. Then check fuel pressure (what should it read while cranking???) I have also heard check fuse #22 but I think that was for post OBDII trucks but not sure if it will make a difference. Then I will check to make sure the fuel switch is working. Can you guys think of anything else I should check???
yes check fuse 22 as it powers the fuel heater which shorts out but it also power the computer. cranking fuel pressure not sure but running it should be 40 to 60 so it should be pretty close to that.
