I have a 1999 F-250 Power Stroke 4w drive crew cab and truck has about 115,000 miles. Just replaced the alternater and batteries last week and everything was fine and now I have another problem, My wife was driving home the other day and the truck just stopped, no sputtering or anything but just stopped. about a week later I was leaving work and stopped at the end of the drive and it just stopped, no nothing just stopped dead...both times it started right back up and we drove it off and it ran a few days.
On my way home from work yesterday it stopped twice and I had a little trouble starting it the first time but started right back up the second time. Longest it took to start was about 30 seconds (think stop light) and today I took it to the dump and it ran fine.
Most likely your CPS, there are at least a thousand posts on this problem. Very little effort using the "search" function will tell you a lot more than you need to know to do this simple R and R.
The CPS is one of the most common problems with these trucks. You can find them from many site sponsors or on EBAY for about $55-60. It is a very easy install and some people even carry an spare around with them. Here is one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-...spagenameZWDVW
There are a ton of posts about the cps cause it is a common problem. Most carry a spare in the glove box with the 10 mm socket needed to change it. The next time it dies and you try to crank it if the tach will not move then it is the cps. It is in the front of the engine and is an easy fix. The stealership will charge around 180, international about 100, but most people get one off ebay and have it ready in there glove box. Good luck
to much info? Maybe...lol. Thanks to everyone who answered and I have been searching and reading about the cps and I don't think I can read it all.lol
Truck has not stopped in a week but I am going to have it hooked up at a garage and see if they can tell me if it is the cps for sure.
My wife actually thought it stopped when she had the air and fan on but not when it was off and I can't remember if that was the way it was for me or not.
Changing it looks easy enough to give a go so I will.
If the cps is bad, will it throw a code to confirm this? Also, my check engine lite isn't coming on when the stalling occurs when driving, is this normal?
My CPS just died last week, and no, it didn't display a check engine light.
I bought a new one on Ebay and had it in place within 10 mins of unpacking it. Solved the problem! :-)
You can take it to a tech and have them check the codes first, but for $50 and a few mins, it seemed worth it to me to replace the CPS before the time, trouble, and bucks involved in going to a mechanic.

Jimstall, Welcome to FTE!!! Glad u were able to benefit from the site with a fix that saved u big bucks. Some folks are getting charged upwards of $500 to have the Stealerships replace the CPS!

There is no real good way for a tech to diagnose a cps when it only happens once a week. The symptoms you are describing are typical cps problems.
As the sensor gets worse, it will happen more often and become harder to restart. You will also begin to notice that the tach instantaneously drops to zero. This is physically impossible due to the large amount of rotating mass in the engine.
even if it isnt the cps it will go out eventually anyway and it is probably cheaper just to replace it now than take it to a mechanic and have him tell you it is the cps and you will still have to replace it
