i have a 1980 ford f 150 4x4 and im trying to find a new governor for the c6 trans in it. Ive checked some part stores and no luck, is this something i need to get from the dealer or does anyone know a good place to check? thanks
Can I ask why you think you need a new governor? There isn't much to them just a couple of springs and weights. If you can find a core transmission just take it off of that. I have a couple around but was wondering what makes you think that yours needs replaced because I don't beleive I have ever heard of one going out which is why your having a hard time finding one.
The reason is because the transmission doesnt always drop down to first gear. have replaced the modulater a couple times thinking it was that and that doesnt seem to be the case. If you give the truck a little more gas it will then downshift, best way to describe it is you slow down to make a turn and then it doesnt drop to first it stays in secound and then goes back to third. As far as i know the only other thing that controls this really on a c6 is the governor. I figured i would change it because im getting ready to pull the trans to put in a stall convertor to match the cam i put in the motor.
No on a C6 the kick down rod and valve is what controls that and it doesn't have to be very far out of adjustment to not work properly and if it's not there at all then it's definatly a problem. The governor only controls the preasure to indicate speed for the shift not at what point it downshifts or not.
A sticky governor will cause the transmission to stay in second gear when stopping. A bit of throttle will often unstick the valve in the governor and allow the downshift to first.
The kickdown linkage is only used for just that, full throttle kickdown.
The governor is located inside the extension housing. Why not just pull it out and try cleaning it. It is easy to disassemble for cleaning. If the transmission is not contaminated with particles in the fluid, cleaning the governor should last quite a while.
okay thanks and mainly i considered replacing it cause i was gonna have the trans pulled to change my torque converter, seemed easier to do at the time, is the piece actualy replaceable or cant buy it new?
I don't know if there is any aftermarket source and it may no longer be supplied through Ford. I was a trans tech in a Ford dealer for 25 years and I don't remember ever needing a new governor for a C6. It is a really simple device and is easy to disassemble and clean. If you feel the need for a new one try your Ford dealer parts dept. There are ways to obtain obsolete parts through the dealership from people who make a business buying obsolete parts from the dealers and manufacturers.
