1989 Ranger 2.9L --> 5.0L
It's a 1989 Ranger with a 2.9L EFI motor, it has a cracked driverside head and instead of trying to replace this head I've done some asking around and found a friend who is willing to sell me the 302 out of his Mustang as he is replacing it with a rebuilt in a short while. So I come here with a few questions, and looking for input on my project to come for my next semester of automechanics in school.
Here's some details (Prices are Canadian)
The truck $800
- 2.9L V6 - Cracked head (Driverside)
- Regular cab
- 4x4
- 5-speed manual transmission
- New rear end (Not sure of type, or time replaced)
- New Clutch
- New Radiator (under a month old)
- No body rust, when I looked at the truck It was to dark to see under for possible frame rust/damage
- No accidents, new rear bumper (steel w/ diamonplate top)
- New mud tires
The 302 $150
- Carburated
- New valve stainless steel valve covers
- Doing a complete valve-job before install
- Seen it running in friends mustang, works awsome
- Comes with all necessary parts to run it in mine (any computers, sensors, etc)
- Might grab the radiator if he'll let me, if not I'll pick on up somewhere else
The Transmission (dont know the cost of this yet)
- Not sure what type of transmission to go with, local tranny shop recommended finding an AOD out of a late 80's mustang for ease of install. I'm keeping 4-wheel drive and would prefer to have a manual, but I'm not sure of how difficult, or expensive it is to put a T5 into this conversion. Recommendations? What would be a good choice to pull a T5 out of? I was thinking of searching some pick-a-part places for a 4x4 drive F-series (Late 80's) with a standard and yanking the tranny. Good idea?
Making it Fit (Another thing Im not sure of the cost on)
- I obviouslly need to have this thing fitting properly, I've heard that a 2"-3" body lift helps to get everything inside better but If it's not needed, I'm trying to avoid a body lift, as I am getting a 3" suspension lift shortly after this conversion. I need to purchase the motor mounts, dual sump oil pan, oil filter relocation kit, electric fan, suggestions on what to get for each of these?
The Exhaust
- If they will fit, I will be keeping the headers already on the 5.0L
- Will be using a true-dual exhaust system with a pair of Flowmaster 40 series mufflers
- I don't know much about catalytic converters, or exhaust in general, what size pipes would you recommend? I'm thinking 2.5"
