grrrrr truck was towed (state police rant)

I just picked up my 02 F-350 PSD on wednesday evening. I love it, awsome truck. The dealer told me to come in this coming Monday for the state inspection sticker. They said that it would it would be about two to three days for the registration to swap over from my Ranger to the F-350. So the story moves on to yesterday afternoon and I am leaving work. I pull out of the parking lot and start to drive home. I got about 100 feet out of the parkling lot and I get pulled over by the Mass State Police. The Trooper comes to the window of the truck and asked why I dont have an inspection sticker. I tell him that I just got the truck and I have an appointment for monday morning. He then asks to see my reg. So I tell him that I dont have it and that I am driving on a dealer transfer. I give him the dealer transfer paper, bill of sale, and the recipt of insurance(that I paid in full) Well it turns out that the girl that took care of my insurance made a mistake. When she went to swap the insurance to the F-350, she somehow canced my insurance policy on my Ranger, which revoked the registration. Because the reg is revoked, they had to tow my truck. He did cut me a deal and allow the tow company to tow it to my work parking lot so I dont have to pay storage fees. I was charged $90 to have my truck towed aobut 100 ft. I am not able to drive my truck, and I have summons to aprear in court for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

The real kicker is that I had to get my boss to give me a ride home and a ride back in today.

Tell me that this doesnt just twist up the old short hairs! Driving unregistered and uninsured on a trucked that I just bought, just the insurance in full and paid the dealer $50 to swap the reg.

If the dealer screwed up, make him pay for the $90 tow fee and give you a loaner until he gets it straightened out. Also, if you have to pay any fines, make him pay that, or better yet, make him go to court with you and explain why you didn't have the right documentation. If he says he will not go, subpoena him. He will not have any choice then.

WORD:

The dealership owes you some damages here.

1) The towing fee.
2) The reinstatement fee for your insurance (if any)
3) Inconvenience.
4) Lost time and wages.
5) An accounting before the court acknowleging their part in this.

That trooper didn't do you a favor either - he made money for the tow company instead of following you 100' back to the lot. I find that contemptable.

Massachusetts, you say? I'll file that under "BEWARE of"

I think that they problem with everything is in the insurance agents hands to be honest with you. I talked to the dealer and they agree. I have paid my insurance in full for the year, it looks as if the girl canceled my insurance policy on my ranger and opened a new policy on the 350. The dealer explained to me that the girl should have added the 350 to my insurance and removed the Ranger.

I will be going after the the dealer and insurance agent for this. After placing a call to the dealer this morning, my salesman said that they were having a hard time getting my reg to transfer. The reason suposedly unknown to the dealer is the reg was revoked due to the screw up at the ins. agent. The best part is knowone ever notified me of this problem.

Before you go off on the State Trooper, consider this possibility. What if you had gotten into a wreck and THEN found out you had no insurance coverage. You would have been on the hook big time for damages, medical bills, and other asssorted nasty lawsuit and fees/fines. If you look at it this way, the Trooper (who was doing his job) possibly saved you from a bigger nightmare than you are currently encountering.
Now that said, demand the insurance company set things right with the judge and tow company, and next time you see the Trooper, thank him for saving you from a fate worse than death.

I think Tom may just be upset for the $90.00 tow bill for 100' he received because of the cop?

He could have allowed him to drive it back if he really wanted to

At the time he thought the insurance/regsitration part was all taken care of.
He showed responsibilty for that

But did the cop really have to tow your truck 100 feet? was that really necessary? that is just one example of how most cops can be, if they dont like you they will screw you over, and believe me i know!

Wana bet the state trooper had a hot list of revoked registrations due to cancelled insurance? Now, if the state trooper was just doing his job (I hate that catch-all statement) properly he would have, should have realized there was a big mistake by either the dealer or insurance carrier. after all the reciept for payment in full for insurance is proof of insurance. If you had gotten in a wreck the dealer and or insurance carrier is held liable if they mistakenly cancelled your insurance after you just payed in full. Call and write a letter to your state insurance commisioner ASP! Show a copy of this letter with all of your documentation when you go to court. I don't know about your state but in Washington when something like this happens you can file a claim with the state for wrongfull impoundment and get a refund for towing.

Happened to my son when the state wrongfully revoked his licence due to lack of payment on a ticket. We had proof from the court and cancelled check to show other wise. It was the fault of a lazy court clerk that had a chip on their shoulder. It took the clerk 38 days to let the state licencing dept know that the fine was payed in full at the district court house. they are supposed to do it within a week. Thankfully the state trooper was doing his job properly and realized there was a big screw up at the clerks office cause we showed him our receipts. In washington when you are stopped with a revoked licence you car is impounded for 30 days! fourtunatly he was thinking and with out a grudge he allowed me to drive the truck home and he did not write a ticket for driving without a valid licence.
Sorry for highjacking your thread for a while but hope all works out for you!!

Police officers I know probably would have thrown you into the back of the cruiser, driven your car the 100 feet to the lot and then handed you the keys. I doubt any would have let you drive the 100 feet in case you decided to take off.

Agreed

Before you go off on the State Trooper, (who was doing his job)
Hmm, The trooper could have used descresion, and let the guy drive 100 ft under the troopers supervisiion. I wonder if there are some tow co. kickbacks...

I doubt any would have let you drive the 100 feet in case you decided to take off.
I don't think a psd can outrun the radio

Have you tried to push a 1-ton truck by yourself? No one to steer or apply the brakes for you either.

I know the feeling.Five years ago I leased a 99 f150 4x4 with 23 miles on it.Supposedly the dealership was going to transfer everything from my 71 f150 with a chevy engine and 4 different colors of paint. One night I was riding down the road going to have a good time after the bar closed with a female I knew and got pulled over for invalid plates and reg.I spent the rest of the night in jail and got my first(and only) drunk driving. Not a happy day in the neighborhood.

Those things should be checked and not taken for granted.

I feel your pain.

If he's 100 feet from work, chances are he has co-workers that would help him.

And i have tried to push a 3/4 ton by myself...not reccomended

I think before I'd have let mine be towed, I'd have gotten to a phone and had a buddy come out with a car trailer. Or at the very least - a class II hitch and a tow chain.

I doubt an unregistered machine could be left on the side of the roadway like any other disabled vehicle, but it sure seems to me that our friend here got purposely hustled.

I also kind of wonder what a State Trooper was checking stickers in town for. Do they use State Troopers for Meter Maids too?

I say this because in reviewing the events above something just doesn't quite jell nicely. The odds of the sticker being noticed, within such a distance that you were pulled over within 100' of entering the road by an officer that (am I assuming correctly here?) operates solo - no partner to watch for things like that - is just stretching my imagination a little far.

Unless he already knew the sticker was not on the truck... (as by scoping out the lot, and waiting for you to pull out onto the street)

That may seem P-Noid on my part, but I tell ya what; "There's somethin' rattlin' in that there hubcap..." Y'know?
