Exclamation Hit my first deer in the X today..at50mph

Hey whats up guys,
Well I hit my first deer today, and let me say im glad I was not driving one of those honda things or it might have went through the windshield. It was a good solid doe, and I did not just clip the deer I hit it completely square up, I mean the a$$ was at one headlight and the head was at the other headlight. I didnt put a scatch on the X...although it gave me a hairline crack in the headlight about the length of your X key. I know this might be messed up(from the money saving standpoint), but I feel I saved not only my life but $500 because there was no damage to my rig so I did not have to report it to the insuance company like if I was driving one of those honda things or a ChevsuburbHumsclade (there all the same ). So now when I go to the gas station I dont feel so so bad...at least for a week or two. Also post your hitting things with the X stories here...im interested to hear of anyone who might have hit something and feel having the X saved them from either paying for damages they would have gotten from being in a normal vehicle or...if you flat out feel the X saved your life.

Also does anyone know how to remove the factory gas pedal chain to wallet? Everytime I hit the gas I feel this tug on my wallet (j/k)

Glad you're okay. Whenever I drive long distances, I drive nothing less than my X - makes me feel safe. My daily commute, I drive my wife's volvo - no point burning all that gas and putting in all those miles going to work and back.

Did you have time to react to step on the brakes? Must've happened at night. They see something bright, they just stay put!

I have hit one deer in my 02X 4x4, it put a small dimple in my front bumper. I have also hit a Grand Am broadside at 65mph that was driven by a drunk that lost control and came accrost the median of the interstate at 10:00pm a few summers ago. There were parts of that car all over the highway and only a little damage to the X. It saved my life that night. No time to react and miss, just stomp on the brakes and hold on....
Glad you and your X are OK. Sorry for the deer...

Glad to hear you're ok there, BlackXowner
I know about hitting large critters, as I have taken a couple vehicles out for some "impromptu hunting" trips!
One was a Chevy station wagon which, when it impacted the moose, crumpled like a Coke can.
The second was a Ford F-150 which fared much better...only about $3,000 damage. I killed both animals, and I didn't get hurt in either accident.

I'm curious...do you have anything on the front of your X like a brush guard or anything? I am wondering how the Excursion will hold up against a 2,500 lb moose. They are a bit bigger than your average deer!

about the brush guard, I dont have anything like that...just the plain ole chrome bumper. As for the moose thing...im not sure how it would hold up, and I really dont want to try it out....seems we are on a moose shortage in Ohio cause there are none .

thanks for the post.

Consider yourself lucky you didnt have a brushgaurd. They are weak, they generally fold around the bumper, smash the grill and booger up the radiator. Brush gaurds are cosmetic only, good for low speed trail crawling to....well block brush. Nobody has mentioned it yet but you have to expect it....Got pics? Side note, if you hit a deer you can call the authorities and they will issue a tag for it....if you like vinison you can keep it and process it, even out of season.

I hit a 200lb 8 point buck at 65mph (on the way to a hunting trip), never even had a chance to hit the brakes. Biggest deer I have seen in years. Sent the deer flying about a 100 feet into the oncoming lane. Thank god there was no one in that lane at the time. The only damage I had was the bumper, grille, AC condensor and one headlight. If I was in a car, it would have been totalled. Although I now drive a little slower in areas with deer.....

My wife took out a large Doe last week.

65 mph, broad daylight.

She said it was large, we have to take her word on that.
Hit the font half of the deer with the driver's side, half spun it so the a$$ got shoved into the front wheel, it made 3-4 revs., and only pieces came out.
Real messy.

Everybody was fine, $2837 in damages to the X.
Bumper, grill, fender pushed into door, headlight assy, core support bent.

She went to the store, did her shopping and went home.

What a vehicle!

What about the Big Tex? I thought I remember someone hitting a deer with it on the front of his X without any damage. I believe it uses 2" pipe.

Dont know about big tex, Im referring to the pep boys, autozone, waldock conversion specials. The fundamental issue with brush gaurds is they are strong on top but the mounts on bottom arent, deer pushes the top of the brush gaurd and has leverage to bend the mounts at the bottom. Big tex may make somethig different.

Well, if anybody has more info on a guard with more substance, i'm all ears.

I would have loved to have just run it through the car wash and said "I fixxed it!"
