This article supersedes TSB 04-02-6 to update the service procedure. ISSUE:
Some 2004 F-150 vehicles, equipped with power sliding rear window, may exhibit a rattle or squeak from the back glass while driving.
ACTION:
If the condition is a rattle or chatter noise from the rear of the cab, and usually occurs while driving over bumps refer to Procedure "A". If the condition is a squeak, chirp, or creaking noise refer to Procedure "B".
SERVICE PROCEDURE
PROCEDURE "A"
The condition may be due to excessive clearance between the center sliding glass and the back glass window runs. Replace the existing upper run channel with new channel (4L3Z-15422A36-AB), which contains a molded in center stop spring tensioner.
Remove upper run channel by pulling down and outward from the driver's side of the vehicle (Figure 1, view a). A small pick or a pair of needle nose pliers may be helpful.
Install the new upper run channel.
Open and close the center glass several times to ensure proper operation.

PROCEDURE "B"
This condition may be due to the exterior trim molding around the outside of the back glass rubbing against the paint of the vehicle. The noise may be temporarily resolved by applying outward pressure on the back glass assembly.
Remove the back glass and trim molding assembly per Workshop Manual Section 501-00.
Remove any existing foam butyl tape from the back glass trim molding.
Clean the back glass trim molding with an alcohol-free cleaner.
Apply a thicker foam butyl tape (E69Z-19562-A), to the back glass trim molding edge starting at the bottom middle and working around. The tape will decrease the pressure of the trim molding against the painted surface.
Reinstall the back glass and torque the nuts to 4 N-m (35 lb-in).

Great, I have that rattle from my window. I'll have to get that fixed. Whenever I hit some bumps I am always trying to see where the rattle is comming from.
My truck is going in for a rattle in the back window on friday! I hope the dealer will fix it this time!! Good Information to read about!! Very helpfull!!
I have no power slider, and had the "squeak" I think Ford should include all rear window squeaks in the 04. Mine took a new window/slider to fix., but it was done!!
I just started noticing the "squeak" sound when going over bumps, I thought it was coming from the rear seats, but maybe this is where it's coming from. I don't have a power rear window so I wonder if it would still be covered??
I have the same rattle I took it to my dealer and the service manager said that "the glass is supposed to float" he said the same thing about my door rattles. I told him that he was turning my truck into a boat. I am now gtting rattles and stuff fixed at a private auto body shop.
I brought a copy of the above listed TSB to the dealer they drove it and confirmed the rattle and ordered the parts. Hopefully the parts will arrive soon and I can get rid of this rattle.
Okay, here is an update. I've been out of town for a month and finally got my truck back to the dealer today. They replaced the Rear Window track as per the TSB and so far it appears to have worked. I noticed there is very little play in the sliding window now. As I drive it over the next few days I will see if the rattle returns, but so far I'm happy...
Well, the darn rattle is back. Actually, I think it may be worse now. It only rattles when I am driving on a bumpy road. Now I will have to try and get it back to the dealer again. I sure hope they can figure something out. This rattle is driving me nuts.
Just brought my fx4 in yesterday for the RATTLE. Left the truck for 2 hours. Dealer gave me no trouble at all and was familiar with the TSB and posting on this site. Had it fixed in no time and truck is nice and solid sounding again.
2004 f150 super crew lariat 4x4, i have had both steps done on my truck and it sounds like it has both the rattle and the squeak now and louder then before. i will be making another trip to the dealership so they can do it all over again.
