Based on comments received, I decided to disassemble the steering box to look at the condition of parts. The box was filled with grease. The worm gear and sector gear appeared to be in generally good condition and operated easily through the full gear engagement. I will reassemble the steering box until I decide whether to reuse it, or go with the heavier duty box, or power steering. I have a good bit of work to complete before reinstalling the steering, but was trying to look ahead.

parts look good. I'll bet it's been rebuilt in the past. The worm looks better than any "used" worm I've ever found
Fabricated pieces of rocker panel. Partial rocker panel removal. Partial rocker panel removal view from under the cab. First piece of rocker panel clamped in place for welding. Repair for corroded kick panel at floor dimmer switch and new floor panel clamped in place for welding.
I bought a 1953 F-250 pickup for a parts truck for items currently missing from my 55 F-100 build that are compatible. I currently plan to use the bench seat, steering wheel, fender alignment rods, horn, front hood emblem, original gauges (maybe), radiator, heater, door and window hardware, and lower front shock mount bolts. There may be other items, but I haven’t fully determined that yet.
The truck has a 215 CID EAA straight six engine and three on the tree transmission that I don’t have a use for. Engine crankshaft turns, but I don’t know anything about the overall condition, except that it has been remanufactured by a motor rebuilding company no longer in business in Houston. Engine has the starter, generator, carburetor and an oil bath air filter. If you see anything that might be of use to you that is not listed above, please let me know.

I've been installing the f35-600 boxes into f100 for over 20 years and everyone loves them.
for starters they are heavy duty compared to the f100 boxes. Also the larger trucks don't get the miles that the f100 pickups got. They are always in good condition in the f600s. Grain truck, fire truck etc
I core f100 boxes and everyone of them has a bad worm gear. Chipped/broken on the worm or the worm looks like a razor blade. Always in the middle. So when you try to adjust to take out the play the steering worm/sector bind on the full turn due to less wear on the full turn
Kevin, my f100 box is in need of replacement. I did read Abe’s description of the installation and the big truck boxes seem like a great replacement. I do want to keep the factory column. I am not in a hurry so after you are healed up will be fine. Please pm the price and any info that I might need to know. thank you.
I pulled the bench seat out of the 1953 F-250 parts truck to begin rehab. The seat appears to have been re-covered once. There is a good bit of corrosion damage which shall be cleaned and repaired where necessary. Foam on the bottom seat was 6 inches thick with holes formed in the foam for air circulation as can be seen in the photo. Bench seat bottom view with tape measure across width of seat.

Seat covering materials. Original seat bottom had the pattern indicated in Post . The seat back did not have foam, but rather a felted type of padding about 1 ½ inches thick.
