dana 21 to np205 t case swap western '69 f100 4x4 build
Back to work on my 69 4x4 f100. I'll get some pics of the truck posted tomorrow. Truck is a bone stock 69 f100 4x4 3inch lift 360 4 speed. Oklahoma ranch truck in great un- restored shape. Just giveing it a good once over currently. The big thing rate now is the tranny is junk.....someone installed an aftermarket ac unit back in the day, and they put in a bit to far to the right. Anyways the shifter was hitting the ac unit in 1st gear and the lock collor on the shifter ball(is that what you call it)? ,because of the pressure, completely fell apart. All that carnage fell into the tranny and presumably took out a few bearings or something. I've been thinking about swaping out the dana 21 t case for a np205. I found a guy near by that is selling a np435 with a married np205 t case out of a low mile 78 f250 4x4. My big question is, what mods if any will be needed to fit the new tranny and case in the truck? Any help will be greatly appreciated.. Will keep you guys updated on the build.....Thanks
I think Driveshaft placement will be good. I am not sure about yoke sizes on the 205 verses the 21 though? Also not sure about lengths. No matter what you need the trans, I would go for it and make it work. You end up with a MUCH better 2 speed transfer case and a work trans!
Hey thanks for the replay! Yep, I'm gonna go for it. Just wondering how involved a swap its going to be....Its back to snowing today, but when we get a nice day I'll get some pics of the truck. She's a beauty!
I did the swap on my 70 f100 4x4 thirty years ago. The tranny mount on the cross member sits farther back so only half way on. I slipped a 3/16 plate between them drilled some extra holes. The transfer case has a mount to the frame so had to drill hole there. Then I had a shop shorten driveshaft with the carrier bearing.still on it. Of course had to fuss with shift linkage to transfer case. I feel it was well worth it!
Well, finely an update on the np205 swap. It can't be done......at least on a '69. The t case is too tall. For the t case to clear the rear cab cross member it gave the motor a real bad angle back...I mean a 30 degree angle or more. I didn't know as I only had the tranny and t case adapter on at the time. When I went to install the t case it was too close to the top. So 2 options if you want to do this swap. Eather your motor sits way the heck back, or you block the cab up. I'm not doing eather, so I'm going back to the crappy dana 21. At least I found a better np435/dana 21 setup than mine. Now to swap the trans for the 3rd time! I think if I was going to need a better t case I would do a divorced highboy setup. As it is I'm not going off roading with the truck, so the ol' 21 will do. I was just trying to take advantage of my stock tranny/t case being junk to go to a better setup. Oh well lol.
