Hey guys I’m starting a thread for my build. I’ll use this thread to ask a lot of questions and show a little progress from time to time.
the story is as goes.
I have a 1981 F250 frame. c6 400 Dana60 rear Dana 44 front
the body is a 1979 F150 ranger XLT 2x4 C6 automatic.
I bought the 79 body strictly for the cab. The bed is bent on every corner as is the fenders, doors, hood and grill.
the cab is straight and rust free.
I have the 4x4 frame stripped of all the old body and ready to start fitting the 79 cab.
I have the front clip removed and the motor unbolted and ready to remove on the 79.
Yesterday a buy brought me 2 nice fenders, new hood hinges and 2 doors in need of repair.
also a usable but far from perfect grill shell.
right now all the work is happening out side. I need to finish a tractor project to make room in the shop for this project.
I hope to get the 79 cab sitting on the 4x4 frame soon so I can get rid of all the 81 parts and all the bent junk dent side parts to keep my better half happy.
My first question (I’ve searched with little success)
where to buy quality bottom door skins?
these both have a little rocker rust.
I may need to buy inner bottoms as well.
I’ll know as I start work on them.
If it's like any body panels that NPD or the other re-pop suppliers sell it's going to be Chinese stuff that's hit or miss. I'm not sure if AMD (Auto Metal Direct) sells door skins or patch panels. Might be worth a look.
I found a very ugly burnt spot on my wiring harness last night. Not sure what all it goes to but one part is the neutral safety switch, ( which I found baling wired to the gas line ) the rest is to a 4 prong plug by the heater box. Pics this afternoon.
Made a little progress after work. I pulled the 400 and c6 from the 79 donor truck and pulled the cab off and set it on the 4x4 frame. Got all the bullnose and bent Denise parts loaded up on the 79 frame to take to the scrap yard.
hopefully I’ll get the project in the shop either this coming weekend or next.
When I bult up my '77 Crew cab pickup, I first purchased a beat-up F250 just for the cancer-free cab.
One thing led to another, and to purchase a rear door, I had to buy a Cab / Chassis F350 longbed 2wd Crew.
Wound up, I put my good cab on the F350 longbed 2wd Crew chassis, then converted to 4x4, and the rest is history.
That will be a great pickup when completed, and put together the way you want it.
These pickups are a great conversation piece at the fueling stations.
