More VIN questions
I've got another VIN to decode... It's:
F37JKCF49xxx
I gather that it's a Cab and Chassis F350 (F37) with the 460 (J) and it was made in Kansas City (K).
I measured the wheelbase, and got 162". On the door plate it has a 161, so I'm guessing that the wheelbase is really 161". I found the "D70" on the rear end, so it's a Dana 70 rear.
The frame is 34" on the outside. What is the big deal about this anyway? So is my '78 F350 Super Cab. Were some narrower than 34"?
Also, wouldn't a Dually in '78 have had 16.5" tires?
Can you get the transmission info or the wheel base info from this VIN? (Is it true that the only automatic behind a 460 was the C-6?) My main question is, how do you know how long the frame was originally? (From Front Bumper to the Rear Bumper?) Or do I have to send this all in to Ford for a "build sheet"?
Sorry for all the questions again, and thanks in advance for any info!
The owner's manual lists both 16" and 16.5" tires on the F-350.
You can't get the transmission type from the actual vin number, but there is a space on the same tag that tells you the transmission code. Code 'G' would be for an automatic transmission, but it doesn't differentiate between types of automatic transmissions.
I can't answer the frame question.
The width of the frame changed in 1973 - and should be the same for all 73 to 79 pickups - they all had to fit the same cab.
they are all about 34" wide in the front from the back of the cab forward.
the f250 4x4 stoped being 34" wide in the rear in '77 1/2
the 1/2 ton 4x4 and all two wheel drive 1/2 and 3/4 tons are 38" in the rear from 73 onward.
the one ton dually cab and chassis 2wd are 34" wide at the rear.
the one ton standard cab 8' bed non dually was 38" in the rear '73 onward, except for super camper specials and oddities like those that may be 34" still thru 77.5.
it all depends on the truck and its configuation during these years.
I might have missed a few but maybe this will clear some confusion.
then again it might make things worse... I hope not.
