gave a jump yesterday in my 2015

later i looked in the owner's manual. I did everything like it said except i had my truck running while connecting.....i guess thats a no no

Im a little bit worried idk i really dont want to give jump starts in these "new" vehicles.....

so ive already read almost every thing here on FTE and by googling.

i just want to know what some of you all think. nothing was hooked up backwards or anything like that....and it happened really fast...bam bam done.

I thought removing the cables while the donor truck (mine) was running was bad (which it was) but the owners manual doesnt say to turn it off before removing everything.

Better to carry a jump pack with you - that way not only can you jump your own battery if necessary (if nobody else is around), but can use it on other cars instead of the risks involved in using jumper cables.

I use the Noco Genius jump boxes; they work great.

i put the Gb150’s in each of my trucks, and gb70’s in two cars. The 150’s are rated for something like 80 starts between charges. I’ve used them a few times; very powerful. What’s really nice is that they also hold their charge for a long time. Was tired of the old jump boxes that not only couldn’t hold a charge for barely one jump, but were usually too run down to use when they were needed. Definitely worth the money.

You’d already know if there was a problem. I ALWAYS shut off all accessories; radio, HVAC etc. If I’m jumping someone, I do the hooking up of the batteries …no one else.

Which size Noco box do you have? Looks to me like it would take the 2000A or bigger for a 6.7 diesel.

no harm will happen.. as long as no errors or misdirection was done.

engine off before hookup.. and while starting the dead one... is considered best...

its voltage spikes and dead shorts are an issue.. reverse polarity is real BAD...
ever see a car/truck battery explode.. I have several times. ( NOT from Me )

I have a set of cables for a welder that I put ends on. With these, I never have my vehicle running, I always shut every thing off then have them start theirs up.

My set are a good 15' in length, all copper. They will pull some amps.

I bought a set like this off eBay, very good quality and you can’t beat the price $30 for 2 gauge / 25 foot jumper cables.

Last year my buddy gave somebody a jump with his Toyota Tacoma. Less than a week later I was installing a new alternator in his truck.

Go the jump box route. Bought my son and wife each one a Noco for Christmas.

My routine is engine off connect, and last connect to the other vehicle. Start my vehicle and let run for 10 minutes, which hopefully gets some energy into the other vehicles battery. Shut my engine off so any surge does not affect my alternator and let the other vehicle start. If it does not start immediately, I call no joy and pull the cables. There's no reason to risk my electrics for other vehicles starting issue not related to a bad battery.

Almost 50 years ago I learned the problems of damaging an alternator helping someone.
