351 W Rear Main Seal Options?

I was wondering if I have to use the rope style seal or if there is an alternative ? My block is a 1982. It doesnt have the recess machined into it for a press in style seal.

Not rope seal, but the split rubber ring type with the steel core:

You need to install them slightly rotated so that each one sticks out of the halves of the main bearing about 1/4". This is so their ends don't line up with the mating faces of the bearing.

Does anybody have a link to a video or a write up on how to properly install one. I did one on my Bronco and it may be leaking. I want the one on my 82 F150 to be right.

Thank you in advance for all replies.

Lots; just searched "Ford two piece rear main seal install", and I got this:

This video is for a 390, but the split ring part is the same for your 351W. He says the spec for the seal end sticking up is 3/8", not 1/4".

I've done a replacement on my 69 Mustang by dropping the oil pan and using a small punch to push out the top half of the ring seal from the block. Some folks prefer to loosen the main caps to allow the crank to drop a little to relieve pressure on that seal half so it will be easier to remove the old one and install the new one. Make sure everything is well oiled, and the seal lip faces INTO the engine.
