That is usually the slip joint in the driveshaft sticking. Fairly common and an easy fix. Just need to regrease the slip joint. There is a TSB on this one too. Pretty minor deal.

Cam phasers are the parts that adjust camshaft timing. They connect the camshaft sprockets to the cam, and allow the PCM to adjust each camshaft's timing individually in relation to the crankshaft.

Attached is the photo of the timing drive. The phasers are the large cylindrical-looking things on the front of the camshafts.

Read the TSB, it's all right there. "Intake VCT" are the phasers for the intake cams, and "Exhaust VCT" for the exhaust cams.

Tom,

Reading the TSB, it would suggest that after 5/2015 they found the issue and fixed it?

Right now debating between a used '13 vs a new '16. Screaming deals on the 16's right now (about $9k off MSRP) and the '13 isn't that much cheaper.

Negative - the phaser design is not corrected. It was updated, but design of it was never the problem. The oil paths that feed them get casting debris and sludge buildup that impedes what the phasers required. So, not an easy fix

With this logic, timing sets would be randomly failing across Ford's entire line up. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Why aren't they failing in all the other 3.5L and 3.7L engines that use the exact same timing set and block design?

Guys, I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way, but unless someone has some non-anecdotal evidence or better yet hard data to back up either side of this discussion, I don't think we're getting anywhere.

93cobra, I don't even know where to look, but does anyone publish statistics on this kind of thing?

And I'll just add don't say to "Google it" or check other forums. Real facts and data.
