Cut and pasted from the 6.4 forum, no responce after 90+ views. I am spoiled from the 6.0 forum I guess
I looked at a 2008 F450 yesterday and really liked it. Priced at $28,000. Has been deleted and egr coolers are not there, but doesn't come with any programmer. I currently own a 6.0 F350 SRW and our new truck camper nessatates a dually.
I have looked around here to see the weak points on the 6.4. Looks like if they are deleted and kept to resonable HP levels they can be a good motor. Is that a correct assumption? Anything I should look for? I will be checking to make sure that oregon doesn't require that a 450 be registered as a truck, and make sure insuance isn't higher that a F350
All I can tell you is I know a Ford FSE, ya know the guy who does thumb up or thumb down on warranty repairs. Flat out to me, never, never buy a 6.4L. Enjoy.

I agree....I'd much rather find a 4wd Dually 6.0 with 4.10 gears, stud it, delete it, and call it good.
You're much better off since repairs are cheaper than HPF system repairs and most of the repairs you can do yourself.
I've had 3 2008 F450 pickups, all with 6.4 motor. Biggest problem I ever had was a radiator that had to be replaced. Loved the trucks, great power. First two trucks I did not delete, last truck I did. If egr and dpf are deleted you've pretty much solved most of the problems with the motor. That being said, if there is a fuel system problem it'll be pretty expensive. Also hope that the previous owner(s) did regular oil and fuel filter changes.
I've said it many times before, and I say it again. The 6.4L was in production for Ford's Super Duty trucks for three model years only. That's model years too many. They are a ticking time bomb on wheels.
I wouldn't buy one even if they were a problem free engine, I could never get over the butt *** ugly grille/front end and side louvers.
You know what they say, opinions are like a@@holes, and everyone has one.
That said, the Ford tech and private shop owner I know loathe them. Navistar cut a lot of corners when they designed that engine in a rush to meet emissions. If you do buy one I would have a hefty slush fund set aside. That, and the fact the MPG is quite crappy compared to many others.
I think this is going to be a tough crowd to sell you on a 6.4. I think there like the 6.0 not as bad as everyone makes them out to be but have a few issues. With that said i think is be willing to give one a try.
For my own curiosity and others, maybe someone from Asheville Engines can chime in on annual sales for replacements and what are they seeing fail?
I would be very curious to know this as well, due to my personal experience (as well as other Ford dealer techs throughout) and poor luck with Ford remanufactured units.
I had a Ford dealership diesel mechanic highly recommend staying away from the 6.4L. He told me that a diesel shop down the road replaces more 6.4L engines than any other engine. After my experience with my 6.0L a seeing a co-worker's experience with his 6.4L, I have to agree "if a 6.0L breaks hard its going to break a checkbook, and if a 6.4L breaks hard its going to break the bank"
What kind of miles on it for $28,000? That would have to be VERY low miles to consider getting a 6.4.
Even Bill Hewitt is recommending people to not even think about a 6.4. Supposedly pistons don't last, rockers have issues, fuel system, parts are crazy expensive.

I thought I was the only one who didn't think the second generation trucks were better looking than the first gens. I like the third generation Super Duty the best, though the fourth gens are growing on me rapidly.
