Looks like they are using the 8.8 "heavy" rear axle more then the usual 9.75. Wonder what you have to order to get a 9.75? Ecoboost? Max trailer tow? Max payload? I'm sure the upgraded 8.8 would be up the the task of towing. But it would be nice to see which trucks get which axle.
The 8.8 was always rated at 3,800 lbs max, so it makes sense that it would be capable of a suitable GAWR for the lightened 2015 model. Looking at the payload chart the majority of configurations have a rear GAWR below that.
Strange as my dads new Platinum with max tow, non max payload (3.55 gears) looks to have the same diff as my truck (2007 Harley-Davidson with a 9.75). They look very similar and have 12 bolts where as the 8.8's have 10 I believe. Wonder if the 9.75s are making their way into other models too? Maybe the loaded up potentially heavier trucks?

Interesting! I wanted the 9.75 axle in my Platinum that's on order, but the Ford lit shows it only comes with the HD Payload package, and that isn't available on any trim level above the base Lariat. Not even with the Max Tow package, which I have added. In fact, mine has every option but the off-road FX4, so maybe it'll be like your father's.
