360 or 390...is there a way to tell them apart?

Title says it all. 2 days ago I removed my cab to blast and get ready for paint. While the cab was off I cleaned the back of the motor and the transmission. Written on the transmission was 390 cid. I know, I know, what the transmission says has no part in what the motor is. However I am wondering if the motor and trans were sold as a unit in which it is possible that the engine is in fact a 390. Is there a way to tell them apart without dropping the oil pan?

You need to do the dowel test. Get a wooden dowel. Remove spark plugs and insert dowel into any cylinder. Have a friend turn it over by hand, and make a mark at the lowest and highest places of the stroke. You could also bring #1 up to TDC and mark the dowel in the 1 and then 4 cylinders, but it's harder to turn over. The difference between the two is the stroke. 3.5"=352/360, about 3 3/4"(3.784)=390.
If you wind up with 3.5" the only way to tell if it's a 352 or 360 is to pull the head and measure the bore. 4.00"=352, 4.05"=360/390/410

Externally almost all FE's look the same.
