So I was at a used lot today looking at an 04 Excursion with the 5.4. Its ESOF 4wd. I looked under it and everything looked pretty familiar compared to my 01 F350 V10, other than this thing sticking down
I assumed it was to ensure the death of anyone who tried to lay down in front of you as you were running them over.... It is pretty big and obvious. Anybody ever remove it?

My EX has one, too. From the factory. NHV is what I was told by the dealership when I asked.
I can just see a group of engineers mulling over some vibration in the Ex that they just can't seem to figure out the cause of. Hours and hours of discussion. Brainstorming. Suddenly someone suggests simply attaching a hunk of iron to the bottom of the truck. "Of course!!!" they all say. "That's it!!! We just need to stick a huge hunk of iron to the bottom of the truck. That will fix it!!!" They did, and there we have it.
Of course they may have had a concern that the truck might blow away in a wind storm so they attached this hunk of iron to the bottom to give it a low center of gravity and to weight it down in the event of said wind storm.
Or.... "We have been given the task of disposing of 100 tons of iron sitting out in the back yard. What to do..... What to do.... Oh, let's just attach pieces of it to the bottom of the biggest, most powerful, Urban Assault Vehicle ever built. No one will ever know it's there!!!!

It's funny you post that, because there is such a thing as a NVH Engineer!

I tried to when I put a new tranny in. A little noticable difference
I wouldn't touch it. Ford put it there the eliminate any small vibrations coming from the front driveshaft area and it is a benefit to the truck with no adverse problems just for being there. No one will see it, etc.
