HD 5 Speed choices

So I stumbled across an 84 F700 5 Speed (dump truck) and so far it looks like it will bolt up. I believe it is the Clark 285 but am confirming that. It would be nice to not be winding the truck out when empty/lightly loaded. I like the T-18, but with the 4.11 rear I feel like I'm living in the 3k rpms range all the time. Guy wants about two bills for it. Worth it?

If it bolts up doesn't need rebuilt, has the right gearing and fits with minor work then 2 bills ain't a bad price. I'm guessing a zf5 trans won't bolt up to your engine? I'll be using a zf5 in my 66 with a 460

Lots of 5ers are direct in 5th. Not all are OD, and OD may be more rare.

Post the trans and axle codes off the warranty plate, that might give a clue.

What engine in your truck and donor?

AFAIK, the Clark trans to bell is not the same as the T18, and the input will be larger as well.

Tape measure time on all points....

Rear end: 86100
5200-X-1090
AB
Which looks like a Rockwell forklift rear axle. No codes on the transmission yet. Still waiting.

Current setup in truck is a 360/T18/4.11 Dana 70.
AFAIK, the ZF5 does not bolt to an FE as it has an integrated bell.

Only good for Windsors and 385 series.

Dang! it's a Spicer CM4045D. 5 = 1:1. No joy.

The input shaft is a lot bigger on a clark 5 speed. Both the spline for the clutch disc and the tip that goes in a pilot bearing. Note, this area is one of the differences between a FE crank and a FT crank.

I forgot all about people using the nv4500 trans in there swaps. An adapter plate is a good option for the zf5 to mate up when wanting one behind a FE. also a t5 trans has been used but depending how heavy of loads and what kind of beating you plan to do on the truck it might not be the best trans option as they tend to be weaker due to being mostly made for lighter cars.

Wow, why didn't someone do that before. Any idea how you deal with the throw out bearing issued on a ZF with an adapter thickness in there?

Bolt-on a short-shaft Tremec TKO to the stock FE manual bell and call it done.

Hi neighbor, last FE was installed in 76 so the 84 is not a bolt up exchange. As noted it doesn't matter if it is a 3 spd or a 10 spd without OD thay are all 1 to 1 output ratios.

With your big truck a rear gear swap might be the least expensive. They are not easy on gas. :'(

Oh, believe me, this thing is a pig on gas. I still want the granny though. It is after all a dump truck. If I could locate a 370 with an OD combo I'd be sorely tempted. Looks like I'm in for a rebuild on the 360, so now rebuilding something else is also on the table.

JEFFFAFA 11-20-2014 02:53 PM

How 'bout keeping your granny gear and adding an external overdrive unit?

Jeff I looked into doing that with a GV setup was about $16-$1800 with me doing the installation, Then about $200 to shorten the driveline.

I did the nv4500 $1400. But I bought a new flywheel new stage ll clutch setup. But can be done for about $450. finding a vn4500 at PnP.

I paid $700+$175 for the trans adapter shift stick he had also on ebay and picked it up 135 miles way. I did have to change the input shaft & bearing retainer. A very ez install in my 4wd. But I did have to make new 4wd shift linkage mounting bracket.

Cut 6" out of the drive line.

Ranger Torque Splitter might be the cheapest option.

Solution to all Clark problems in here:

I have just a little over $500 in the swap.

There was a guy who did one here about 8-9 yrs ago. But, If, I did it, i would have to have gone to bucket seats which, I don't want switch to them and make it a 2 person only vehicle.
