04 Excursion 6.0 Heater Hose Leaking

ROUND 3....For months I thought the small "orange hose" on the top passenger side of my 04 6.0 Excursion was SLOWLY leaking. And all the threads pointed to that! After purchasing a replacement (Blue hose) and watching the orange hose MORE closely I realized no leak from that area. BUT still.....a puddle under the passenger seat on the ground and continuous coolant dripping on the starter! Over the past month the situation has gotten worse, add coolant get a big puddle........

WALA this AM my dog and I go for a ride using high heat and when we stop I look under the hood and finally see the little DRIP!!!! CAUGHT IT IN THE ACT*%*%*%*% Looks like it's coming from the heater hose at the "Y" connection and dripping on the valve cover and running down the back of the engine onto the starter. All this makes sense NOW!:-X13

Looks like the heater hose has a metal clamp coming out of the heater control valve and that hose feeds a "Y" leading up to the firewall. AND THAT IS WHERE THE LEAK IS. At the "Y" in the heater hose next to the fire wall. Looks like all 3 connections at the "Y" have a black molded ring around each hose connection.

I think the "Y" is cracked inside the hose???:-X20

Looks like the plastic "Y" should be removed and replaced?? Can anyone point me to pictures or web posting showing how to replace this hose assembly? What are the ford numbers for this "Y" connection and heater hose coming off the control valve? The hose is about 6 inches long and has a 90% turn.http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums...cons/icon5.gif

Thanks Excursion Diesel Buddies

Project Update: Ford wants $118.00 for the entire hose assembly! I have found a plastic 3/4" barbed Y that may work just fine......I'll keep you posted.

I just posted about the same hose leaking, but mine was where a bolt head wore thru the hose at the back of the engine:

What is the part # for that hose? Thanks

How did this end? It seems like my "Y" connector is also leaking.

I just did this repair and it's holding very nicely.

I didnt' want to pay Ford $300 for the hose and their crappy connection, so I cut the Y as close to the top of the hose as possible and used some copper piping to permanently fix it.

I had to "sweat the pipe" and solder some fittings in, but it's not as hard as it looks or sounds.

Any concerns about how the copper and solder (lead, silver, etc.) will react with the coolant additives at 200*?

It's been almost a month and not a single drip. I ran it hard, let the cooling system pressurize, let it sit for 30 minutes watching it as it idled in the driveway. Plus the solder I used was rated to melt at 430 degrees. By the time my truck gets that hot, I'll need a new engine anyway, lol!

Thank you

Yeah, thread from the dead... I'm in this same position right now and am about to go parts hunting. Did you use 7/8" or 3/4" pipe and fittings? I measured out the original as 7/8" but that doesn't seem to be very common.

BTW, the hose assembly is now obsolete and there's not a one left in Ford inventory in the USA.

On edit: Built this myself tonight. Use 3/4" copper pipe and fittings. Thanks for the great idea.

Please share details, I need to make one for my truck as well. Thanks

Here's how it's done

I used 3/4" copper pipe and fittings. You'll have to sweat it, but that's no big deal if you've never done it before.

You need:
6" length of 3/4" copper pipe cut into three 1-7/8" sections (give or take a little)
1 right angle male/female fitting
1 tee fitting

Assemble as shown.
