problems with a starter
I have a 74 f100 w 302/FMX tranny. I changed the starter about 2 weeks ago and sometimes when I go to crank it, it sounds like the pinion is not engaging. It sounds like a EEEEEEERRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNN. Its not like a grinding like trying to crank it after its started. It doesnt do it all the time, usually after two attempts, it will turn right over. I think its a problem with the starter, but i was wondering if the FMX starter and the c6 starter are different. The looked identical when i compared them, but the one that came out had what looked liked little washers on the pinion shaft behind the starter gear. Ive tried taking it out and seeing if it was catching on anything or wasnt lined up right, but i didnt find anything. Could it be the starter or is it the solenoid or ignition switch?

Typically a ring gear will be bad in one of four place (on V8s). The engine always stops on the compression stroke, a V8 has for comp strokes per revolution, so you need to look all the way around to be sure whether the ring gear is good or bad.
