The backup lights have never worked in my 72 F-350 SCS and it will start in every shifter location.I am slowly trying to fix all the problems with this truck and this is next on my list.I got under the dash at the steering column and found the neutral safety switch that was wired in the park position. After looking at my repair book and doing a search on this site I guess the actuator pin is broke off.Got a flashlight and a mirror and took a look but the actuator pin is not there, must have fallen off.I am getting a new one but do not know how to get the new one on,do you pull the shift tube out or somehow put it on with the tube in the truck?Looks like a real tight fit as I can barely fit my fingers into that hole where the pin goes.Any ideas are appreciated.
The "arm" is made from spring steel, the base has two little "claws" that clip onto the shifter tube.
The actuator fails in two ways. Either the "arm" breaks off, in this case you'll need to remove the piece that is still clamped to the shifter tube, or the piece loses its tensil strength and the whole piece falls off. In that case you can just clip the new one on. This can be done under the dash without removing the column.
Even when the "arm" is broken off, it's possible to remove the remaining piece using a flathead screwdriver in the holes on it. It can be a bit of a pain to get the new one clipped in securely, but it can be done from under the dash with the column in place, as mike said - I just did that on mine last week. Dennis Carpenter sells the new lever for a pretty reasonable price too.
Thanks Mike and bkaul,I ordered my actuator part today and hope to get it by Friday,I checked the switch and it works fine as my backup lights come on when I pull the switch lever to that position. Thanks again for the help. Well I got my part today(Friday) and was it ever a pain in the a$$.Had to move the trailer brake, remove the neutral safety switch loosen up the steering column and then after about four beers I finally got it to snap into place and it all works great. Now I have backup lights and it will only start in park and neutral. Thanks everyone for your help.
