i have a 79 with a 351m in her and i just went threw and replaced the waterpump and theromstat in it cuz i thaught the water pump went out and was causing it to over heat well its still over heating i think it might be the radiator cuz everthing else is brand new and i think it might be cloged up from a flush there was alot of corrosion in the thermostat neck and in the lines when i baught it.
whats a good replacment rad for the truck i looked on parts warehouse and they seem to have a lot to chose from so any ideas whould be great
Most important question, do you have a fan shroud? If you do, First, I'd burp the system. Maybe you just have air in there. Next I'd check the fan clutch. Then I'd flush the system. You might even wanna do a leak down and/or compression test to make sure you didn't blow a head gasket.
Then when it comes to radiators, you wanna buy the biggest you can afford. Personally, I go with the super cooler from Bronco Graveyard.
alright well i guess i forgot to put some important info in there, i baught the truck about a month ago i changed the oil and checked all the fluids before driving it down. i drove it 4 hours from va to nc it drove fine (interstate and stop and go traffic), didnt run hot (no shroud) and ran like a top. i got it home in nc and i wanted to go threw and do all the matinance things on it so it wouldnt let me down. i replaced all the water pump, rad hoses, all the belts, new wires, plugs, cap, rotor the whole nine yards. i decided i would do a coolant flush on it because the inlet hose was a bit nasty, so i ran the flush threw it (20 mins heat on high) then drained filled with water ran it (20 mins heat on high) and drained it again, then i put anti-freeze in it 50/50 and it did fine for about 10 mins then i noticed the temp gauge was a bit higher then i had seen it before so i jumped out and poped the hood to see if i had a leak anywhere thinking maybe i was losing coolant and i didnt next thing i know the anti-freeze was blown out of the over flow tube i shut it off and let it cool and added more water started it back up and i purged the air out of it and all the bubbles came out and it was just fluid coming out of the bleeder nut. it did the same thing about 10 mins later it burped all the water out again. so now it was just all water in the system and it did it for a third time with no thermostat in the housing. im thinking its the radiator cuz i did the flush and maybe all the crap cloged it up but i have no clue the motor has good compression did lose any coolant on the trip down. anymore thaughts im thinking i might get the bronco graveyard super cooling as you said above 704 dentside man

351M and 400 have to have a thermostat and it has to be one meant for them as the bypass is cast into the block. With the wrong t-stat or with no t-stat .... no restriction in the bypass and water just goes right back through the water pump and into the block wiothout ever seeing a radiator.
bullitt390- i got the only one autozone had its a fail safe thermostat and part number is 7200-195
tbear853- so your saying if it has no thermostat the water never even goes into the rad? it just goes right back into the block? the water was blown out of the over flow hose on the rad whould that cause that?
You know I was having the same problem I have a 78' 351m. I flushed my system, put the new pump, etc... and finally bogged down and bought a new 3 core radiator at O'reilly auto parts for about $160 if I remember right. Radiator size really depends on what your plans for your truck are. If your hauling 20,000 pounds - bigger the better, if its your daily driver then the 3 core should do just fine.
Three core should work fine . If you put in a new radiator ,be sure to have all of the crudd out of the engine block or it will go in and plug up your new radiator just as soon as you start running it.T-stat needs to correct on this engine.
I took out the thermostat that was in it when I did the flush it was the correct thermostat it had the bypass flange on it. Im gonna try and put it. Back in and see what happens. Does anyone know how I can flush all of the stuff out the block so it doesn't clog up my new rad?
Also my future plans are a 429\460 transplant and it is my daily driver most of the time but it does have 40s and a lift do u think a 3 core will be fine I tow bass boat and a few other things.
I . Does anyone know how I can flush all of the stuff out the block so it doesn't clog up my new rad?
I had one so bad a few years ago, small block, I had to pull the engine and remove the soft plugs , then dig and flush all I could out of it. I did that after I installed a new radiator and plugged it up right away. I had to buy another radiator because the repair shop said they would have to take it apart to get it cleaned as it was plugged tight. It was cheaper to buy a new one.I hope you have better luck.
Darn im hopen I have better luck then that. I was looking at the super cooler from broncograve yard but on autoparts warehouse I found a autotrust platinum 3 row radiator for 340 with free shipping and a 5 year unkimited warrenty it brake u send it to them they send u a new one no questions asked and there's no limit as to how many times it brakes and they send u a new one so im guessing this is including A clog??? Good deal or not seeing how I have a chance of it clogging again. Also do u think it would work for a 460or a 429 motor swap.
The warranty may not cover a clog. You may want to install a filter in the upper radiator hose.I saw some made for the mustang on www.mustangdepot.com , made by Gano Filters. I thought about getting one ,but never did. JIM
