1940 pickup rearend info

Hi, I am in the process of aquiring a rearend for my 1940 pickup. I recently purchased a leafspring suspension kit, and would like to put in a 9" rearend. I understand the older Bronco rearends will fit with little mods. I would like to know what other combinations might work, and any SPECS for any rearend info. Thanks!

Hi Darrin - Welcome to FTE.

I like your choice of truck to resto. We're doing a 1941 which is the same truck, just a few cosmetic differences.

I can't help you on different options for the rear. We went with the 9" from an older Bronco. Check out my user gallery and you can see how nicely it fits.

Other than that, be patient for a reply. There's a lot of guys here that will jump in and help.

Hi Darrin -

The 9" rear we're using is from a 1968 small bronco. It fits perfect for both the frame and fender wells. You can use whatever gears you want, we went with 325's. You may have to cut off and move the perches. Ours came with 2 sets of perches, one worked the other didn't. Don't know which was the stock ones as it was being used by some friends in a dirt track car.

The engine we're using is a 5.0 HO out of a 1986 Mustang. We're also using the T5 5 speed tranny. Steve hasn't worried about the drive shaft yet since we're still in the building stage and once we set the body & box on, the weight will slightly change the length of the shaft.

If you need any further info, please let me know.

Hope this helps some, Although I have not myself checked it I have been told to use a 68 to 74 Nova rear end, or an early firebird rearend too. But wanting to be a purist I would opt for the Bronco rear end. It was also mentioned to me that a Grenada or Monarch rear would fit but was just a bit narrower. That might be a good option if you wanted wider tires. I haven't measured it yet, but I can't help but think a mustang rear would be perfect. Anyway this is all just speculation based on what I have been told. I hope it at least gives you some extra option to check out
