38 cab and fenders

Does anybody know if a cab and front fenders from a 39 1 ton ( dual wheels) will fit a 38 1 ton pickup (single wheel)?

Well, I can't say that I know FOR SURE as I have not actually tried to fit the panels.
However, the cab looks to be the same to me. I think you could take a few measurements to be sure. If it's different I can't see the difference. The front fenders appear to be different to me. They have the same basic shape but the rear end by the door looks like it drops down farther to reach the running board. The front of the fender is not notched out to allow for the bumper brackets as a pickup is.
Like I said, I don't know for sure but this is my opinion.

My biggest problem is that the truck is several hours away so I can't measure anything. I hate to buy this thing if I am not sure anything will fit my truck.

Thanks for your help,

Terry

Hi Terry, Welcome to FTE

I don't know what kind of a time frame you're under to buy the parts truck, but if you can wait, I'm sure one of the guys "in the know" will jump in here to help.

I don't know much about the 1 ton's.

Now I have never seen these trucks up close to take a look at the body or what not but the way I see it is that this is a matter of if the frames match up as to wether or not it will just bolt right up.

The cabs should be the same for them both being larger trucks, unless Ford decided to be difficult this year. Now if you're going to use the cab, then the fenders should be easy. All the mounts can of course be modified for the new frame if they don't match, but my guess is that they would. And if the frame gets in the way of the front fenders a little notch would an easy task to fix the problem.

Now as far as the fenders and running board thig that Larry mentioned. Well, you didn't say what you were putting on the back. I'd say that if you're just going to havea flat/stakebed then there's no problem, just use the running boards for the truck you got the fenders from. And if the mounts don't match they are fairly simple and can easily be moved or modified. Now if you are going to havean express delivery bed in the back ten I can see you having a little trouble if the fender don't match. But then again they may just bolt up.

That's about all I can say about this subject. They may fit dirrectly on, but if not they should fit with a little work.

Okay, I did the same thing, except with a '47 model. I took all the sheetmetal off a '47 1 ton that I had bought and put it all on a '46 1/2 ton frame I had. The cab and all was the same. The fenders were the same, at leas the '47's were. The 1 ton had 17" wheels, the 1/2 16's, with 17's an option. So, 1/2 tons and 1 tons all shared the same metal, it's only when you get to the 1.5 tons that it gets different. You said you had dual wheels, if I'm not mistaken then you may have a 1.5 ton since the 1 tons used single rear wheels. The 1.5 ton does have diffrent fenders, the wheel openings are bigger to allow for the 20" wheels. I remeber this since I got to work on a '38 1.5 ton a few years ago in auto class. See if you can find out what the wheel base is on the truck, that right there will let you know if it's a 1 ton or 1.5 ton.

My truck has single rear wheels and the one I was checking on had duals. I believe you are right about the dual wheel truck being a 1 1/2 ton.

I decided to pass on buying it because of the doubt of the parts fitting mine. I would really like to find a 39 1 ton so I could use the hyd. brake setup and hopefully a driver side door.

I appreciate all the good info.

I will just keep on looking!!

So the sheet metal on your truck is good, but you just want the drive line? Well then, I have a '41 with hydrolic brakes, maybe one of those will fit? I'm not near where the truck is now but in a few weekends I can go and take a couple measurements and tell you the distance that the springs are (assuming that you have two parrellel springs on the front) for both the front and back. So then you may be able to look for other years for the drive line too.

My truck has the single leaf spring on the front and 17' wheels.

I almost need to find a 39 1 ton in order to make things fit. At least I think so.

I just picked up another motor on E-bay so my biggest problem now is figuring out what to do with the brakes. I haven't found a parts source for the mechanical brakes or a conversion kit to hyd.

Once I get it going, I've got to be able to stop it!!
