What type of rooftop carrier does anyone recommend?
I purchased one from sears. I forget the model. It is not the white one called "x-cargo". It is the larger one that is black in color. I believe the name is something along the line of "the sport model" or something like that. I have it in storage and have not used it in a while. I can put four huge duffel bags plus a baby stroller and odds and ends in it. We used it when we took a road trip down to florida. My Expi handled fine with all of the weight up top. I am happy with it. Good luck. Jake.

This might be a bit more work for you -- but I went to Oshman's and purchased a Ski Tube. It has low aerodynamic impact and I put all my emergency gear in it including extra oil, etc. I designed my own brackets and notched out the rib in the ski tube to fit my cross beams on the rook. It works great.
By the way -- if you do not have rear speakers, remove the plastic panel in you jack compartment and you will have more room to stow things over the right rear wheel area accessed from the jack compartment.

I have the same black carrier from Sears.... I love it... I've added fishing pole racks to the top of mine... Although I find myself having to prop the lib open all the time... those little hinges don't do a good jod of holding it open....
