Several methods of getting it off:

Use a screwdriver as a lever between the "tangs" on the cap to help twist it off.
Use your oil filter wrench
Some lids have a square recess for a ratchet

Others I'm sure I'm forgetting. They seem to pop off easier if you drain the bowl first.

I always used a long extension in one of the holes in the lid and then gently tap it with a hammer.

I took a piece of lumber and screwed 2 large screws at the proper spacing to drop down into 2 of the pockets on the cap... (allow the heads of the screws to stick out about a inch or so..)

I do similar to bama29fan, except I use a crescent wrench and tighten it over the jaws of the pliers. That gives a nice long handle that is not likely to slip.

I was able to snag one of these for free from a friend.

7.3L on one side, 6.0L on the other. Not that I have a 6.0!

I use a special billet aluminum wrench from Dieselsite but I don't think they sell them anymore.

Here's a few like what was posted earlier:

It makes it easy, that's for sure.

I was surprised when my buddy gave it to me. He said he rarely used it.
