Use a screwdriver as a lever between the "tangs" on the cap to help twist it off.

Some lids have a square recess for a ratchet

Thanks, im a noob when it comes to the 7.3, i work on my 05 more because its my truck, the 7.3 is my dad's. does the 7.3 have an in-line filter? When my dad bought the fuel filters for my 6.0 and his 7.3 they only gave him one for his truck.
I took a piece of lumber and screwed 2 large screws at the proper spacing to drop down into 2 of the pockets on the cap... (allow the heads of the screws to stick out about a inch or so..)

Only the one on the engine if its a stock fuel system.
I do similar to bama29fan, except I use a crescent wrench and tighten it over the jaws of the pliers. That gives a nice long handle that is not likely to slip.
