what would cause power steering fluid to squirt out from the top of my PSF reservoir? I ask this not because I actully saw it do this, but i did find some pooled on top of the cap as well as a deposit of it across the engine conpartment on the underside of the hood.
It could be coused by over heating. Most times the pump is overheated becouse people hold the wheel at the max turn (you can here the pump make a diferent sound when this happens). Or if you turned the wheel whithout the motor running the pump will toss fluid.
Why is it that Ford power steering pumps throw fluid when you turn the wheel with the engine off? I've never seen it happen in anything other than my dad's truck and my truck, both Fords.
My pump did the same thing once. It was the only time I've seen such a thing (big mess too). Hasn't done it again in over two years - was wierd. It did happen after I swapped steering gears and I theorize it may have been air half trapped in the pump that backed out back into the resvoir (SP?) with a lot of force. I don't think the return line could sustain that type of pressure without coming off first???
That's what a friend of mine said it could be too, was air in the system. I bled it real good (lock to lock several times) and I haven't turned with the engine off in a while, so I don't know if it fixed it or not. But the two Ford trucks in my family have done it, while everything else has not.
