1993 4.9 cold starting problem?

Whenever I try to start my engine after it has been off for several hours and is cold, the first attempt ALWAYS starts then within a couple seconds it stalls.
Then the second attempt it will usually sputter but stay running. Except sometimes when it is very cold it can take 3 attempts.

It will not stay at high (cold) idle very long. Only a couple seconds.
I removed the Idle air control solenoid, disassembled and cleaned the shaft with carb cleaner and reinstalled.
That appeared to cure the problem. Fired right up on first attempt, and high idled real nice for 30 seconds or so, but after only 2 days I'm back to 3 attempts on a cold start to get her to stay running.
I run regular 87 octane.

Any idea's what I can try to fix my problem ??

Thanks for your time.

Try running 89 octane or higher for one. I know the evaporate at a higher temp, but I really think your problem starts with hot soak, where the fuel is actually being boiled off after shutdown. Then, when you go to restart, it is trying to run off of vapors. If that doesn't fix it, first check the resistance of the coolant temp sensor against the manual specs, if bad replace, and check out the air charge temp sensor, again, if bad, replace.
