My # 6 plug is soaked in gasoline. At idle my truck shakes. When driving it is fine when I turn the overdrive off. I know this is keeping my RPM's up and killing my gas mileage. I've done a compression test which is fine. The code in the computer reads running rich. I was told by Ford that it is not a faulty injector. They claim they need to run a diagnostic on it but am broke and know if someone told me the problem I could probably fix it myself. I've had mechanics look at it and all say something different. I don't trust them so am trying this as a last resort! I've replaced plugs and wires which helped but hasn't fixed the problem. Thank you and God bless!
Since your broke and have no idea, here is some guidence.
You must have a CEL light on and codes stored.
The first thing to do is get the codes sored in the PCM by using a reader.
This will tell you what the major causes are, not the parts that are faulty.
From your discription if accurate; you have one cylinder out.
Note: I know from the motor being a V6 that you have two coil packs.
If plugs and wires did not solve the issue, you likely have one bad coil pack.
Check for spark on the faulty cylinder. Use a spark plug attached to the coil wire for the cylinder you believe to be in trouble.
Lay the plug against ground and run the motor, observe the spark. If none or very weak, you likely need to replace the coil for that cylinder.
.
Further: the codes should indicate the cylinder that is out. The code will be one of these: P0301, 302, 303, 304, 306 or 306. Note the last number of each code is the cylinder number.
There will be a code about being to rich (a code in the 170 series). This code is the result of the cylinder passing unburnt fuel and is not a fault, only reporting what it detects..
If you clear the ignition fault, the code for being rich will also clear by it'self.
Once you get the motor running smooth again, stop the motor, remove the negitive battery cable for a few minutes then reconnect and start the motor again.
If no CEL lamp comes on after some drive cycles, you have fixed the fault.
If not., the codes need to be read again to see what the "current" state of affairs is and go after the new codes same as a new problem.
Do not get hung up on old codes once you have done some work unless they did not change. (common sense)
Each time you do work, clear codes so you are not trying to deal with old history.
Make sure you have the plug wires in the proper coil terminals.
Good luck.
well someone replied but you needed to read what i wrote. a 4.2 only has 1 coil pack not two but i took your advice and replaced it thanks to a friend loaning me the money. it runs just a little bit better but still shakes at idle and at constant speed. it still reads 6 codes all says running rich. please someone help. thankyouandGodBless!
I'm not sure where your located so I don't know whats around you. Nearly every major auto parts chain will scan your codes for free. Auto Zone, O'reilly, Advanced Auto. Just ask them if they'll scan(signs are usually in the windows saying they pull codes for free). Then have them print them out and post your results here.
