I've got a '77 with the stock 4-speed, and as much as I'd love to dump the big bucks into this truck, I don't have them.
I changed out ALL of the fluid the first week I owned the truck, and it all looked good. The transmission oil was fine, and it is functional, but I need to get it to not be so sticky. in the back of my brain I can remember how a transmission works, and the shift forks and kevlar pads, but I don't know about this specific transmission. any body have some thoughts, or at least some reference material on how to go about this? who sells service kits?
I also need to put seals in my t-case, as it's leaking pretty good. should I do anything else while I'm in there?
most tranny shops can get you a rebuild kit, and the big parts depos all sell them, I would suggest making sure you need a rebuild before you do.. they are bulletproof if taken care of.
as for the transfer case its the same deal as the tranny if not more so depending on version.
interesting problem I had was my transfer case leaked. I also had a rod knock .. replaced the engine leak went away my guess is less vibration..
also make sure your breather valves are clean on the transfer so your not gassing out the wrong way
Look at your transmission to see what you have. A T18 will have a cast iron cover and the NP435 will have a aluminum top cover. They are both really stout transmissions, and very easy to rebuild. Do a search for the one you have as there is a ton of info on the web on both.
