Does anyone make "skins" that weld on?
Neighbor's 78 has some rust, only a little on the cab, worst is the bed/rear wheel wells. I was telling him that it is cheaper to find a new bed. But, we want to cover all angles....
Finding good beds is starting to get harder to find. The wheel well problem is very common might as well fix it or save up for somebody to fix it. Just my .02 cents.
the whole side panels are nice but out of lmc you are gona be paying like 250-300 per side so 600 for both skins but the patch panels are going for 25 bucks each. and if you get a good body guy they look just as good as the whole panel. unless both sides of the bed are just as bad as the wheel wells. IMO the whole side panels would take more work and cost alot more then just fixing the rusted panels.

I can do two COMPLETE bed sides in a 10 hour day. that is taking the old ones off, preping the bed and new sides and putting the new ones on.
Patch panels take approx 8 hours per side and that is going to be the only new metal, plus you would need to fix the rest of the bed side. If the wheel wells are rotten, there is more rust else where
Guys I was told by a Ford body man that the front fenders on our rigs have the exact same curve as the bed and that he cuts out front fenders and uses the factory metal for a patch. The front fenders seldom ever rust out. I have not tried it, yet, but when I get a battered front clip that I am taking off one, I have bee keeping the fender if the curve is straight.... food for thought...

You can cut the front fenders and use the metal for the back. The only difference is the way the inside of the fender is rolled. You will have to streighten the lip to fit it to the inner bracing. I am in the process of doing my truck bed right now. I bought panels for my project, but cut the piece out of one of my parts truck to see if it would fit. It looks like a perfect match.
If I had it to do over, I would seriously look into bed sides. I have learned a lot, and if I can make them look good, it will be worth it.
