first time towing

Hooked up my TT today combined weight 13740 enroute to myrtle beach sc. We got on the road and ran into some 25 pmh wind gust. I had a death grip on the wheel. The wind blew us all over the road. The weather here sux by the way, I could not tell if I needed to upgrade some steering or swaybar or the wind was just so bad I could not have helped it. My trans temp showed a high of 187 in fourth gear and when it shifted to od it dropped it to 168. I thought that was pretty good. However it did stay in forth most of the trip. It kinda shocked me because it ways on 5200#.I was hoping for OD a little more. Well I just wanted to share my expirience.

Weight distribution hitch?

Stabilizer/sway bar between the vehicle and trailer?

I have a 02 XLT V10 2wd and pulled a 40' Forrest river TT for 3 years and never had a problem with wind. Trailer weighed 9500 empty and 11500 loaded. EX was always level and the stabilizer/sway bar was always tight but not tight enough to cause a problem when turning.

Those are the only things I can think of. If you got hit by real high winds broadside then not much can be done but pull over and wait for it to pass.

In overdrive would be forth gear. Out of overdrive would be third gear. You have a 4 speed tranny.

You need to adjust your set-up a bit...I have been pulling for many years and never had those kinds of issues...true my towing has been with a Tahoe and an Avalanche, but the X should be better than those at towing...

If this is the first time you ahve ever towed ask someone to help you set it up in person...you'll need to make sure that the weight distribution hitch and the ant-sway bar are both set-up correctly or they could actaully make the towing "more" difficult than if you had nothing more than a ball...

Pretty much most tires will be fairly equal as long as you get the proper load range (E). Personally I have had great success with my Good Year Wrangler Silent Armours. I tow a 26' TT and it tows great, tires hava about 55000 miles on them and have quite a bit of tread still to go! Also, I'm not sure this is an issue where you live but it is for me, but they are great in the snow too! Just my experience, but for sure load range E.

I'll never buy another Goodyear in my life...IME they don't wear evenly, they quickly cup, and as far as I'm concerned they are not worth the money you pay simply for the "Goodyear" name.

I would go with BFG All Terrain TA/KO if you have the money and if you need to go with a cheaper tire try MasterCraft Courser AT or Courser CT.

I have had good luck with all three for towing and multiuse applications (on road and off road applications).

I hear you on the money thing. I bit the bullet and bought some BFG AT KOs. It was $980 installed and with tax for 285/75/16 in load E!!! OUCH!!

I used the BFG's all the time on my other SUV's, a little noisy and wore well. I put the Silent Armor on my Ex for $1050.00 and have not regretted it. Have 10k on them, great in the snow and helped towing.

I use Michelin AT/2 load range E. Make sure you fill those tires to max pressure to get the squishiness out. Disregard what the door jam says. Pump them up when towing.

I use the Firestone Transforce (E)because that's what I could afford at the time (500 installed). I like them so far
