Got a 2002 7.3 Excursion that has recently started to run out of fuel when the computer says 50-60 miles to empty. I could previously run it to 0 miles no problem. When I fill back up it indicates that I still have 3-4 gallons in tank.
Ideas?? fuel system is stock.
When you do a complete fill up is the miles to empty what it use to be at? mine has always been around 480 miles to empty when full give or take, now if a guage was off by 50-60 it seems like it would say 530 to 540 to start?
That hasn't changed I don't think. I know there's some fuel left when I "run out" because when I fill back up It takes 3-4 gallons less than usual. I guess I may run it low and drop the tank to see what is going on.
First off, trust the "Lie-O-Meter" at your peril. I should be getting about 28 mpg if that is the standard to go by. Wanna buy a highly fuel efficient SUV? The wife has asked "What sort of miles are they talking about? Playmobile miles?"
Second, sometimes the fuel pickup might be the issue and you might need to do the hutch mod.
Well I've had the thing for five years and put on over 100k on it and never had the problem. I have run it to zero more than once and never ran out. I'm sure that something is going on. Just gotta find the time to check it out I guess. Thought maybe someone has had a similar problem in the past to get me started in the right direction!! Thanks!!
i do and never ran low , mind you the garages in the uk are less than 10 miles apart so i dont panic when i see the gauge running low (ok i do a little lol)
Alright, I'm trying to put some pics of my fuel pickup problem. I ain't to computer literate if you know what I mean. How do I insert photos with my replies?
Okay. Here is a picture of the thing that fell off the fuel pickup. That's why I was running out of fuel w/ 3-4 gallons left. Fixed it by doing the Hutch mod.
I have the same problem except when its low or i hit the brakes hard it seem to rough idle and when the computre shows 50 miles or so i run out. BTW PSD's dont run on fumes i found out! anyway do you have to drop the tank to get at the sending unit or is there access from the trunk? Also do you think that "dohickey" dropping may create a hole for air to get into the lines? that would explain my sloshing braking issue!
