Power steering pump pully doesn't align correctly with the rest of the system and has chewed up a new belt in 9,000 miles. so how do I adjust it to correct alignment? This is a truck I bought to fill in the gap while I deal w/ tranny problems on my B-4000.
91 F-150 4x4, no smog pump, removed at some other time/ place before I bought it used from prob the forth owner. While it's a 'beater' it's also all I have to get to work. Wife would love to ditch her old Chevy wagon and 'ride proud', but not yet.
Dang, but I miss my little Ranger.
I need 1/32" out on it, whle it doesn't seem like much, I assure you that it is.
1/32" will not tear up a belt in 9000 miles. How do I know........I work in a factory that has tons of reaving and a alignment error of 1/32 is great on some of our equipment. At that level of misalgnment a loaded belt can run 24-7 for months and months on end.
A 91 F150 should have a serphentine belt setup. Why do you have a sepreate belt?
I would take the belt off and clean the pulley grooves with sandpaper to remove any rust or burrs that would wear the belt. My belt runs at least a 1/4" out of alignment without any problems.
If you want to move it, go by a Autozone, Advance store etc. Most of them have the pulley puller/installer that you can borrow and return with a deposit. Only way to move them properly is that tool.
It's prob off about 1/8 inch which is enough to make it jump a grove, which in turn makes it grind on the outer edge of the pully. The engine has around 9,000mi. on it since it was rebuilt [before I bought it]. How the one pully could suddenly be off so far is a puzzle to me. I take it that the pully can simply backed out with no other adjustments necessary?
I am not 100% on this but dosent the power steering pump have to be shimmed in order to change alignment? Usualy it is a fixed face pulley. If it has to go aft use some washers to move it as such. Forward shim the face of the flange and so on.
